To my surprise -- and I suspect my publishers were trying to con me -- my book (first written in English) of memoirs and recipes is available from Walmart (and someone else, can't recall name). This is shameless self-promotion, as my publishers are too poor (?) or stingy (?) to do promotion. The title is "The Saffron Pear Tree -- and other kitchen memories".

Kick me, kick me, I deserve a kick for this!!

(Reason I'm not here often is simply being busy with stuff). Joanie, are you well? Time for an e-mail, don't you think?? LOve you all.

Congratulations Zuri! So glad your book has been picked up by American distributors, it deserves

wider distribution.

Hey, are you serious??

This is fantastic!! I don't have much time for surfing the Web (no, NOT writing, cleaning house, doing laundry and going grocery shoppping, LOL!) and here you all came, and congratulated me! I feel like a queen, because I am rather shy and even posting that here felt to me like being very shameless!!!

That last entry from rvb -- what do you mean, next-to-last copy?? I know only a few hundred were sold to the USA, but it's a no-account unpretentious book so would still love to know why you said "next-to-last" copy. Who in h*ll would order it anyway, except a few good friends like you??

Thanks people, I do not deserve all these unselfish answers.

TO MIMI !!!!

Mimi, I'll have you know: I actually bought that cap in Quebec City, can you believe?? We loved the little we saw of Canada: a week in Toronto (husband was at a conference, and I had almost a week to get to know the beautiful city! Great!) We went to the Falls, Montreal, and then Quebec City. Wish we had time for more. It's one of the most wonderful countries in the world.

To Gayle, Sylvia, all of you !!

I love you all!! I am so pleased at your kind reaction!! They only picked up a few hundred copies, and so did some other place which name I forgot, which is not even a drop in the ocean, but it does give me a kick!! Sylvia, in my new book (out next year) I included your Balsamic Onions and gave you credit -- hope you don't mind !!! It's all over the place by now!

Zuri, ordered your book today. I bought mine from Amazon.com -

they tell you how many copies they have in stock when you're looking at the book. When rvb looked, it said that there were 2 copies left in stock. I bought one today, and I think I'm on a waiting list. I should've moved on it 2 days ago.

Congratulations! I look forward to reading your book.

when i ordered your book from amazon.com, they said that there were only 2 copies remaining...

strangely enough, now they say that it hasn't been released yet.

this after an email at 10:49 this morning saying that it had been shipped.

who knows what goes on in the amazon?

There's a danger zone, not a stranger zone
Than the little plot I walk on that I call my home
Full of eerie sights, weird and skeery sights
Ev'ry vicious animal that creeps and crawls and bites!!

On the Amazon, the prophylactics prowl On the Amazon, the hypodermics howl On
the Amazon, you'll hear a scarab scowl and sting zodiacs on the wing

All the stalactites and vicious vertebrae
Hunt the stalagmites while laryngitis slay
All that parasites that come from Paraguay in the spring
Hmm, hmm hmmm

Snarling equinox among the rocks will seize you
And the fahrenheit comes out at night to freeze you

Wild duodenum are lurking in the trees
And the jungle swarms with green apostrophes
Oh, the Amazon is calling me

On the Amazon, the pax vobiscum bite
On the Amazon, the epiglottis fight
On the Amazon, the hemispheres at night all slink where the agnostics drink

All the hippodromes that lie concealed in mud
Hunt the metronomes that live in swamp and flood
Then the kodachromes run out and drink their blood, poor ginks

While velocipedes among the weeds will scare you
And the menopause with hungry jaws ensnares you

Frenzied adenoids infest the hills and slopes
Everyone avoids the deadly stethoscopes

Oh, the Amazon is calling
Yes, the Amazon is calling
Oh, the Amazon is calling me-ee!!

Thank you! Amazon did NOT buy ....

Obviously I find your replies very interesting. Amazon did NOT buy in copies at the Cape Town Book Fair, so it must be a few copies they obtained 2nd hand, as it seems to me.

Walmart bought, and one other place ... name forgotten. Not Barnes & Noble.

Thanks for the info! Doesn't mean much in royalties, but a book is a sort of baby, and one is interested in its fate!!

Zuri, Pre-ordered your book from Walmart website. It will be shipped Sept. 29th.

Looking forward to reading it. I tried a few other places, several months ago, but was told they could not get the book.

Misplaced, you are just SO sweet. You don't even know whether you'd

find a thing about it that you like, and you're willing to take the chance! I appreciate that. It's so rooted in S-African soil ... Hope you find some stuff you can identify with. ((((Hugs))))

Zuri I fell so much in love with Quebec City that I married a Quebecois...however

I missed my mark because he didn't come from Quebec City but rather the far far north which is where I now am. So it's rare I get to visit Quebec City now, it's an 11-hour drive for us or a very expensive plane ride.

I would LOVE to visit South Africa. About a year ago I discovered author Wilbur Smith and have absolutely devoured his books -- what a fascinating country!! It was my first real introduction to South Africa and of course it's historical fiction but at least inspired by South Africa and written by someone who is from the area, although he was actually born in Zambia.

I am going to order your book, I can't wait to discover a new South African author!
