Now I've heard it all...it is illegal to sell candied ginger in California!

I'm constantly amazed at items that I consider staples being classified as 'seasonal' - I've learned to cringe when I hear the word. So here I am in Trader Joes to buy candied ginger for an apple spice cake and I'm told sorry, that's now illegal in California...WHAT???!!! She read me the blurb that says since it's grown in the ground and absorbs lead, it's banned for now. I reminded them that their produce is also grown in the ground but they had nothing further. Anyone heard of this?

My baker's cut crystallized ginger is natural product of Australia and is made for

Royal Pacific Foods in Monterey CA. Brand name is The Ginger People, same folks who make that great ginger candy that settles your stomach in just a few minutes. It is wonderfully spicy and sweet.

Since March? I think that's when it all started.

Annoyingly enough, every article I've read about it is just a copy/paste of the previous one. No one gives specifics, although there was one mention in one article about products made in China not having regulations like we do in the states. It didn't actually SAY that the ginger was from there. Then they all go off on 'if you only knew the real story behind your food...' and 'consumers should thoroughly research anything they eat...', rather than just give specifics.

I just read up on this today. Since when did the State of California get into the business of suing

retailers? Apparently Trader Joe's is still selling their product. The Ginger people I mentioned in my previous post are also being sued.

Anything to make $$ I guess. The lady at TJ assured me none of their stores are selling it
