oh bugger...I've gone and done it again.

So back in November, I inadvertently offered to do a library cookie event for a senior citizen group at the library (I mistook their bus for the mentally challenged adult bus, so just went ahead and offered to do a cookie event for them as well). There were 6 retirees on the bus plus their supervisor.

Ya. Nothing ever ends up being that simple.

When I called to make a date arrangement in December, the supervisor said December wasn't possible and I suggested Valentine's cookies in February. She agreed and then politely ix-nayed my library site and asked if I could do it at their facility instead so retirees who couldn't ride the bus could participate. Alright. She said it might be up to 12 people.

I called her three weeks ago to firm up dates and never heard back.

Today she called, said did I remember her from December? And I said yes, I've sent you a date request weeks ago and never heard back.

After apologies on her side, the function is now set for February 12 and oh... it's going to be 15 people, but then "folks might just walk in. We could have 20 or more."

Oh, and she'd like it to last an hour and half.

This is where my anal-retentive "how can I control this" gene kicked in. I volleyed back with "max it at 20 people, 3 cookies per person and no more than one hour.

Her final shot across the net was: Oh...I'm so excited! This will be so much more fun that just decorating a cookie from one of those kits.

One guess who already has $40 worth of cookie kits sitting in her kitchen?

So HELP PLEASE!

I will take ideas for cookies, decorating, games, music, etc.

I plan to bake cookies and pre-ice them with Royal icing so they are hard and the attendees can draw on the icing. But that's the only idea I have. An early idea I had was to bake 4" hearts and then cut those into a 3 piece jigsaw pieces to be decorated. It was an idea for 6 cookies, not 20.

I sure wish I could help. But I have never been a cookie decorator. The shortbread that I made for Christmas had the recipient confusing a snowman with a Christmas tree. Granted, a little of the responsibility lies with him.

Geez, games, contests. Old songs with the word 'heart' in them. Okay, something to lose sleep on tonight.

Oddly the search “valentine games for seniors” came up with several things. All I could think of is valentines theme bingo w valentine Hershey kisses or card making. Maybe you could have some cookies that can be iced with sprinkles so they have a choice of either drawing or using colored icings, sprinkles or maybe candy saying hearts.

💕 Good luck!

ps, maybe a sing a lon?

Wondering why she is denigrating the cookie kit. What does she think a cookie decorating activity would be? Very kind of you to cut out, bake and ice the cookies so they are nice and homemade, but the decorating components are the same whether they come from a kit or not. (sprinkles, pearls, etc) Does she think you’re going to make them spin like a top? Seniors making a yo-yo out of them? Sorry if I’m sounding snarky.
Maybe to jazz it up a bit while decorating, run a Valentine's Day Trivia Contest:

Prepare a list of trivia questions related to Valentine's Day, love, or romance in history and old popular romances/movies. (Our Swap team could have some fun helping make the list ;) Read the questions aloud and have participants write down their answers. (Or put that coordinator to work to keep a tally board)

After each round, provide the correct answers and award points for correct guesses. The person with the most points at the end wins a prize. Heart shaped box of candy? Heart socks? A rose?

Too bad those tiny candy hearts with a message printed on them are so small. It would be fun going around the table to have them read them aloud. If they have a Polaroid instant photo printer it would be fun to take pics and hang them on a heart shaped cardboard cutout on a lobby wall.
Hope any part of this rant helps. 😊

a mending broken hearts project. People get a heart-shaped cookie that is in 2 pieces. One part decorated and they have the finish the other to coordinate. Sounds like a lot of work to create the first part.

still trying to think of how many songs there were pre-60s, or anytime, that include the word heart.

hmmmm

Sweet Julia Child, I 💝you guys. These are all excellent ideas! Suddenly, I don't feel so overwhelmed. I can use a LOT of these ideas. Please keep contributing!

I know, my mind went blank save for “let me call you sweetheart” and “everybody loves somebody sometime“
