I just decided to try to get onto Neener's AGAIN...I DID!....so then I tried to do the photo Album...and I DID!...does it come through for everyone I wonder?

What has made my PC co-operate for a change...or is the server co-operating...It's all beyond me BUT it is doing what it should at the moment...so no complaints.

Neat pictures, Joanie!

How did the pork taste? I'm very jealous that you can get banana leaves to wrap your meat in. No banana palms here, and I have yet to find someone who sells the leaves when I need them.

Thanks Joanie...

... your barbeque photos are awesome. Great album.

How long did the meat cook over the banana trunks?

Judy, you can grow your own limited supply.

I bought a banana tree in Florida, but now our local specialty nurseries are carrying them (and you can mail order them in the early spring as well). I plant outside in the spring, and by late summer and fall, I have lots of banana leaves. Then before frost, I chop the tree down (use it in the smoker!) then dig the root mass, pot it, and put it in the basement for the winter. It sprouts during the winter, then I bring it out, gradually introduce it back to direct sun, plant it and start all over again. Divide it as it grows. I've got 4 trees in the back of my garden this year. Gives a nice exotic look to the garden.

Richard...I think that is....

fantastic. I love using banana leaves on the table or plates. Having fresh ones around helps bring that tropical feel.

Thanks so much for helping with the photos. I actually had it over the coals from 9.30 until 6 pm ..

but I had been nibbling at it from 4 pm...Ohh, my left hand had to really smack my right hand away from tasters!
I will start a bit later next time. Now that I know how the fire/trunks work!

Just soo yummy Judy....

tender, juicy, smoky and a slight different flavour that musta' bin the banana leaves/trunk.
I had it sitting on top of the espresso ribs in the fridge and in the pic there was a wee bit of the rub showing but I don't think that gave any flavour (I thought I wouldn't wipe it off)
To serve I just sprinkled with a kosher salt...I hope it is like the Haiwaiin salt. I did have the espresso sauce on the side for the ribs, so some may have used that.
Do you think you could use Richard's idea of summer banana planting?

I will have to look around

but so far, I have not seen any banana plants for sale in nurseries in these parts. I'll do an online search and see what I find.
Would it be too late now if I found one? Another problem I have is very few spots with full sun that aren't right in the center of my front lawn. Not sure how that would add to the "curb-appeal" of the house! LOL

Judy some info.

no, it wouldn't be too late. If you're just getting a tiny plant, or shoot, you could just leave it potted the first year. It will obviously grow larger planted outside (they grow to the confinement of their roots--in a pot they're limited, outside in the ground under the sun, they go nuts). You could still even plant outside, just follow the cycle in the early fall before it gets cold out and bring it indoors.

For years I kept mine in a big pot and just moved it outside. But it continued to send up so many shoots, that I finally started planting those, and those shoots eventually far outgrew what was in my pot. Because they grow so fast in steamy hot summers, they're heavy feeders. So if you have other plants around, make sure everyone is getting fed enough to eat.

You don't have to keep them in direct sunlight. Mine get about 7 hours of direct sunlight and do fine.

Ok, I just looked online and am more confused....

than ever! There are so many varieties of bananas. Can any of the leaves be used, or are some varieties better than others? Looks some might even be winter hardy in this area if heavily mulched (not sure I'd try it, though).
I've linked the site I was checking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Loved your pictures, Joanie. Thanks for going to the trouble to get them posted. Now you can give

us more photos of your island life. It's all so fascinating to me.
