Okay, here's what NOT to do on a rainy day when you have cabin fever - watch Anthony Bourdain and

buy octopus balls from the Japanese market because they LOOKED good on this show, a nice tasty snack with beer. So I took advantage of a break in the rain and walked to the Japanese grocery store to get more tea and other stuff, and bought a bag of these balls from the freezer section. The clerk said they were good!

Sooo, feeling snacky, I put 5 on a plate as instructed by the bag, nuked them for 4 minutes and doused them with ponzu sauce. Well, let me tell ya, if you like octopus chewing gum in a fish paste/green onion type pastry then you'll love them. However I did not.... uck! the pastry part was okay, but the cat won't even touch the octopus part. What Was I Thinking?? Curse that Anthony Bourdain.....

Maybe I'll just order a pizza, but don't you think ordering pizza on a rainy day is bad karma because of the poor delivery guy?? smileys/bigsmile.gif

I think the first clue was nuking octopus - there is NO WAY for anythin edible to result.

I did watch that episode and I would love to try them but I bet fresh is a WHOLE lot more appetizing.

We bought octopus flavored chips once...

they were awful, but the cat somehow got into the packet, and she thought they were great!

And my sister gave me Anthony Bourdain's books for my birthday

and for a while there I decided I was never going to eat out again. But I loved reading the books - unputdownable!

that would be them, I would tell you the proper Japanese name for them but have already consigned

them to Davey Jones locker, where the denizens of the deep can wear out their own jawbones on these things! Next time they set up the booth that sells these fresh in J-town I'll give them another try... Some things are just not meant to be had at home!!!!!

Oh, I looove takoyaki! But I've only had fresh - 4 minutes in the micro just sounds too long!!

Plus watching them make it is half the fun! And you have to have the proper toppings - a drizzle of Japanese mayo, takoyaki sauce, and shaved bonito flakes, which dance gracefully from the heat of the cooked takoyaki.

Yum! Please try again, if you see it being made fresh!
