Okay, this must be a record amount paid for a head of cauliflower....

Yesterday I zipped into the grocery store and grabbed a nice looking head of cauliflower. I didn't pay any attention to the price- just grabbed it so I could make mashed cauliflower to go with dinner. At the check out counter I gasped as the scanner read out $9.53. I had some other groceries, was in a hurry, really wanted that cauliflower so I bought it. It was labled "organic."

Mind you, it WAS really tasty but holy cow! Groceries are always expensive on Kauai but this must be one for the record books!

yikes Cathy, that is expensive. why is produce so expensive there? I would think you could

grow anything in Hawaii?

That is a lot! Was it by any chance organic? Sometimes, they are almost next to regular?

Cathy, I may have bought the cauliflower in a pinch just like, but I don't think I could have

mashed it! At that price I'd have had to roast it whole or something, and present it on a silver platter.

Nope, not wrong scanner cheezz. I once paid $11 for two medium-sized zukes

which is still a funny story we tell.

You would think anything can grow in Hawaii but there must be people willing to GROW things here in order to have them available. Land is outrageously expensive and property taxes are through the roof so farming is not as big as it should be in a warm place like this. There are lettuce farmers, lots of other things- quick-growing crops. I personally don't know of any place that grows cauliflower. I have a small garden but it is far too wet where I am to grow it. We have clay soil too- bad drainage. Don't tell me to put stuff in the soil- I have to the tune of a lot more than I paid for that cauliflower (more like the cost of a kitchen renovation!) Usually I pay about $6 for a nice cauliflower (if I can FIND a nice cauliflower.) Ah, the price of paradise!

A new grocery store opened up in our area. It would be nice, but EVERY TIME I shop there, they make

a mistake in their favor. Last time, I grabbed a couple of nice pink grapefruits that were advertised for 69 cents a piece. When I checked out, the cashier rang up the two of them for $2.12. This time, I was paying attention, and was able to correct the mistake, but usually, I don't notice until I get home. I'm saving the receipts and will eventually go in with a stack of them to see if I can get a refund.

yeah, I hear you Joe. We did savor every bite, focusing only on the fork at hand as we ate it.

It should have at LEAST had gold flakes in it.

Yikes, that sure is pricey. Happened to me once as well, got to the

checkout and what I thought was $3.99 for the head was $3.99 per pound. Told them (kindly) they could keep it.

My uncle moved from L.A. to Maui about 10 years ago. He just this month sold his condo

with a view and he and his bride headed back for the mainland. The cost of living was just too high for them. So glad I got to visit while he was there! It IS paradise!

I'm curious to know how paying $11 for two zukes can be funny! Care to share the tale with us, Cathy?!

I have a hard enough time eating vegetables that are cheap - can't imagine how I'd do with those prices. I'll bet not much goes to waste in your fridge!

I just HAD to try a new recipe- it called for ribbons of zuke and yellow crookneck

squash- the idea was to saute it with other ingredients and it would end up looking sort of like pasta on a plate. I zipped to the store- and this was several years ago before zucchini was common in our grocery stores here. I think it was around Christmas time. Anyway, I found two medium-sized zukes, buzzed up to the cashier and she looked at me with wide eyes and said "are you sure you want these?" I said "sure!" then asked "why do you ask?" She showed me on her screen that it was $11.00. I was going to buy it no matter what but was shocked at the price. That store has been ripping us all off for so many years but that was ridiculous! The thing that balanced it out was that a friend gave me the crookneck squash which, here, is generally more expensive than zucchini.

Well, the recipe DID turn out to look sort of like pasta and it was okay, not great but the story lingers on......

Don't feel bad--your organic cauliflower was a bargain. . .

Our Vons grocery store jacked broccoli to 3$ a pound. . . due to that "terrible horrendous" weather we had in California a while back. I saw the price and laughed. The jack the price of anything any chance they get.

How about $12 for an organic butternut? Priced $3.99/lb, but

weighed in at 3 pounds. I mistakenly thought the price WAS $3.99.

Good butternut, but I was unable to tell the difference between it and a non-organic one.

You were in what I like to call "Mission Mode" where a person will do WHATEVER it

takes to fulfill a cooking (or other type of) mission. I know the "mode!"

Thanks for sharing the story!
