Oktoberfest

At the request of many it looks like another Oktoberfest is on the horizon. I plan to scale it back from the last one as I can no longer stand on my feet for very long at any one time in order to prepare the food.

I'm seriously considering asking folks to bring a side but my anal side rears its ugly head and says "no, you'll lose all control over the menu!" Then I grab my rolling pin and whack it a couple of times and try to let my common sense side take back over.

The real question here is should I just scale back or should I ask folks to bring German dishes, knowing I may end up with enchiladas? And don't get me wrong, I do looooove enchiladas. Just not at Oktoberfest.

Also, any suggestions for a punch or non-alcoholic drink that would fall in the Oktoberfest category? I'm not necessarily looking for 100% authenticity, but the closer the better.

I apologize for rambling. Blame the benedryl I took for allergies.

Why not pass out Oktobertfest recipes you would like your friends to bring.

That way you could control the menu. A few years ago a group of my friends and I had "dinner parties" about once a month. The hostess planned the Menu and supplied the main course and beverages. She supplied the recipes to each couple. Only stipulation was that none of the dishes had been tried before. (Used Gourmet Magazine a lot). Lots of fun and not a strain on the hostess. Can't think of a non-alcohol drink though. Good Luck. I'll come - just tell me what to bring.

Request the Oktoberfest items like this: Your best German dishes to needed, some with or without

sauerkraut or..

German's best dishes for Oktoberfest (no enchilada's or spaghetti please LOL)

or...

Oktoberfest, show off your German Cuisine

Did someone say sauerkraut?! LoL - how about non-alcoholic beer for the beverage

And for dishes to bring, maybe suggest something like "Bring yer favoritezen Deutch fooden to pass" on the invitation - on the order of what Dianne said, but have fun with it.

Or if you'd like easy side dishes you can prepare ahead of time, there are some posters here that make darn-good sounding German foods. Maybe they would be happy to make suggestions for you.

That's a good idea -- most people would do better given a couple choices than on their own.

If you get help with the food, you'll enjoy it a lot more, too... keeping the rolling pin handy

Rec: Oompah-pah Sauerkraut and Oktoberfest Skillet, 2 of my father's best recipes, I've posted these

before, so please enjoy them, they're delicious.

I thought this would be fitting this time of the year, abundance of apples, cooler weather, and Oktoberfest right around the corner. Enjoy

Oompah-pah Sauerkraut

1 onion (yellow or white), chopped/diced

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of caraway seed

3/4 cup chicken broth

2 cups of sauerkraut

1 potato, peeled and grated/shredded

Saute onion, using cooking spray until translucent.

Add caraway seed, chicken broth, sauerkraut, and shredded potato.

Simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, stir often.

Continue to simmer up to 10 to 15 minutes longer.

Serve with:

Octoberfest Skillet

16oz pkg of kelbasa sliced in diagonal chunks

2 onions (white or yellow) quartered

2 apples (tart) pealed and sliced

1 green bell pepper sliced

2 TSP of butter

1/4 cup of brown sugar

Place sausage in skilled sprayed with cooking spray, heat until browned.

Add onion, appples, and green bell pepper, heat until tender.

Add butter and brown sugar, stir until mixture coats sausage and vegetables.

Enjoy

Thanks all. I'm taking the rolling pin in hand and only doing appies, mains and dessert.

I'll ask folks for sides and/or drinks. We'll provide beer, Riesling and apple cider. I'd still like to offer one more non-alcoholic drink, but it will probably end up being iced tea or soda.

Doesn't sound like you're wielding that rolling pin enough!! Sounds like you're doing almost ALL!

Surely you can trust one or two others to bring a dessert or main dish...? (surely, I am one to talk, being a control-freak in the kitchen myself... am learning as I get older tho *g*)
