I happened on "James Beard's Menus For Entertaning" (pub. 1965) today at my favorite local thrift store- I stop there to peruse books once in a while. I've known about this book for years but just never looked hard enough for it. Now I have it! Full of fabulous fare and elaborate presentations. Love it, love it! Anyone else have it?

Way to go, Cathy. Would that by chance be the thrift store that's

near the great saimin spot you told me about? If so, I found an awesome new platter there for $3 (valued at $40 plus). I was so thrilled. Of course, I had to take the heavy thing as carry on for the flight home....LOL, but it was soooo worth it. Each time I use it I think of my lovely vacation on Kauai.

I understand, I have his original James Beard American Cookery, The New James Beard, Beard on Bread,

Beard on Food, Beard on Pasta, Theory and Practice (a wonderful book), and New Fish Cookery. I'm a real James Beard fan. That one is new to me.

Okay, I thought that I had things covered with my Julia Child and Richard Olney books,....

apparently I'm missing out on one of their contemporaries. I will check out James Beard.

Wow, That is one I had back when. Some how moving, it got left along the way, it was so

beautiful.
Beard on Bread is one my very favorites! I bake breads every day usually without a recipe. Sometimes, they start to get a little off and I just review the section on "what I did wrong".

I must search for that again.

My old copy of Mastering the Art came in a box of cookbooks a friend of mine got for $3. There was a bunch of the old Time-Life books in there which have fun info.
Good for you Cathy!!!

I have the complete set of both the Time-Life Foods of the World and The Good Cook. The Foods of

The World includes the 6 or so on Regional American cooking and an index to the entire set. I'm amazed at how well the recipes held up over the years. I think it's because the authors didn't compromise and wrote the recipes using authentic ingredients. The Asian books in particular call for things I'd never heard of let alone be able to find when I first got the books, but today they are readily available. Unfortunately, I've made so few recipes from them. So many recipes, so little time.

Any one spotting one of these books in a used book store or just the spiral recipe supplements should take a good look. They're a treasure.

they are indeed. every one I've seen in this series has been first rate...

the Austrian and German editions are my recommendations for very authentic English language german cookbooks. Julia Child worked on the French edition.

For those who are interested, this entertaining book can be found

on Amazon. It is through their used book stores. Granted they are not .50 but the prices are quite resonable. From.01 cent on up. Of course the shipping is $3.49.

Cookbooks and James Beard (more)

I was able to take a cooking class from the master himself in San Francisco many years ago. Marion Cunningham was his assistant. It was a wonderful experience.
The Time-Life series was the basis of many of my college dinner parties; especially the Greece, India and African.
The authors are well known and professional; Richard Olney and others. The ingredients are authentic and the recipes WORK.
My Indian dinner party wowed an Australian visitor who proclaimed the food was better than any Indian food he had eaten in England.
Advice for those who would like to preview some of the books; try your local library and if the book is not owned there, ask for Interlibrary Loan.

Most libraries will borrow from a huge network of other libraries throughout the world; usually at no cost to you.

Thanks, am getting an Amazon order together now, several lost on ship that must be replaced.

Oh my goodness YES, Joe- if you are not familiar with his work enjoy discovering him and

...while you are at it, find some MFK Fisher books to read as well. Hers are not so much cookbooks but books about life and food and living and other glorious things.

and the comment I most remember was Beard's comment that bell pepper skins(more)

are indigestible by humans and should be removed before eating!!!!!
