bring mine in now and they are all so small. Do they come back the next year if I were to keep them warm? They didn't last year but they were not covered.

I've always lived in warm climate Marge so I don't know. It likes lots of sun though.>>>

I'll do some looking and see what I can find.

i live in metro dc, and haven't needed to bring mine in...

i will when nighttime lows hit 35.

when you do bring em in, trim back severely. put em in the brightest sun you can spare and keep soil just moist.

btw, the rootless stalks in the supermarkets WILL root. it takes about 2-3 weeks and 3 or 4 water changes. i keep mine on a sunny deck and even with starting them in june, they're 30" tall.

btw, when you crop longleafed herbs like lemon grass or chives for culinary use, snip 1 or a few leaves at the base. when cropping leafy herbs like basil, cut just a little above a growth center

I brought in your basil the other night... we had a frost and I didn't want

it to turn black. I remembered about 11pm, so I went out there with my jacket and flashlight. As I dug them up, I could see my breath!

Now I have to figure out what to do with all my basil plants. The house smells wonderful, by the way!

And welcome back. 'Hope your trip was relaxing.

Oh thank you. I hope I can remember all that next Spring. So many

times I thought of looking up the correct way to clip but always forgot. This is helpful info.

Is your lemon grass so crowded that it's difficult to find a reasonable stock? Mine are so small.

i have 3 in a 1/2 whiskey barrel...

also 4 0r 5 thai basils and one lonely (but not forgotten) vietnamese coriander. a fair amount of room. if you're limited try one.

and use good commercial potting soil with sharp drainage at the bottom. the best drainage is broken clay flowerpots or crockery. next best is small rocks (egg size or down to cherry tomato in size).

and SMOOCH.

i've never wintered lemongrass over before, but i'll try this year.

i'll give em a flattop by snipping all back to about 3" with scissors. i'll freeze some of the leaves and dry some. i'm thinking of making some strong lemongrass tea, reducing and freezing in ice cube trays.

the garage should be ok if you get good sun through it and it doesn't freeze.

it might be easier to buy a stalk of lemongrass in mid march, root it in water (rootone is a great help) and plant outdoors after your frost-free date.

i'm sure i forgot something marg, but the more you ask, the more i'll learn (ask any teacher).

try a sunny window, BUT....

i'm collecting seeds outta my framas and they mail real easy.
