Organic Farm Membership Subscriptions--Anyone ever do this?

I've recently discovered an organic farm that offers a limited number of membership subscriptions each year (unfortunately, they are sold out this year). Basically, they offer the week's pickings to members twice a week. You take what you want.

Does anyone have any experience doing this? Just wondering what people thought of the whole experience--here, it's a 25-week commitment that runs the gamut from early spring lettuces through the growing season to winter squash and pumpkins. For me, it sounds too amazing to be true; but just wondered if others had any insight. TIA!

My brother is doing something like this. . .

He gets shipments of organic produce every two weeks. He had some wastage at first, not remembering that he had produce and not knowing how to use/eat some of the stuff, but he says he loves it now.

I've done that and, depending on the farm, it's a great deal. the one...

joined here in Oregon was outside of Eugene, over 2 hrs away but a friend of mine delivered for me and a few others. I gave him a list of what I was interested in and he would bring that along with whatever else he thought looked good and I might like. getting those boxes each week was just a joy.

now we have a farmer's market every saturday that is almost 100% organic everything from veggies to meat. also a baker who can actually make real croissants among many other wonderful breads and pasteries.

I think you would love it!

The amazing seasonal list for this farm:

The more I read about this, the more I want to do it. I can shop at their stand this summer to check out their produce. It is going to be a committment since it's an hour drive out and back to the farm. But here is the list of things they grow that they make available to their subscribing members:

Spring

Summer
Arugula, cabbage, carrots, cucumber, edamame' green soybeans, eggplant, garlic, green beans, green onions, herbs, leeks, lettuce, okra, onions, potatoes, salad mixes, swiss chard, tomatillos, tomatoes, assorted melons, summer squash, zucchini, eggs available, free range chicken available

Fall
arugula, beets, broccoli raab, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, eggplant garlic, green beans, leeks, lettuce, mustard greens, okra, onions, potatoes, radish, spinach, sweet peppers, sweet peppers, sweet potato, swiss chard, tomatillos, tomatoes, turnips, corn shalks, gourds, pumpkins, winter squash, eggs available, free range chicken available.

Randi, was it Wintergreen Farm?

I used to subscribe to them. The produce was fabulous! Where in Oregon do you live? I"m in Eugene.

In the Midwest, a corn "shalk" is

a bunch of cut corn stalks that are tied up after the harvest. People use them as fall/halloween decorations. But their original use was to efficiently collect the stalks from the fields since corn stalks take forever to decompose and they would interfere with the next spring's cultivation of the field.

I don't remember the name of the farm, but then I don't remember a lot of things these days...

it was, maybe, 8 years ago. I do remember looking forward to my "goodie" box. it was just wonderful stuff.

I'm in Newport where there isn't too much of anything but sea lions and eagles... '-))

the farmer's market was very small for many years but they've grown. they have great produce now. even huge bunches of purselane for $1.50, scored on that one. there's also organic beef, lamb and pork from Mt. Angel Meat Company near Corvalis. they have good stuff too.

I'm way over due for a trip to Eugene, Trader Joe's and costco. putting the finishing touches on my kitchen and then heading in with 2 coolers smileys/smile.gif can't wait!

that's an impressive list. you can't go wrong with any of it. all in all, that's

not a bad drive into the country to load up on fresh, organic produce. maybe lunch in an out of the way little resturant... smileys/smile.gif

Nothing specifically 'Italian" . . . More>

but we have a Trader Joes, Market of Choice and are getting a Whole Foods. We do have Farmers Markets on Saturdays and Tuesdays in more than one location. We also have a fabulous Asian market and a new Indian one. I love Newport. We usually rent a house with friends there every spring break.

thanks, I was looking for proscuitto and hot coppa and such. we used to get into...

Eugene once a month but haven't been for ages now. I'm looking forward to TJ's in few weeks. Wendy at Nye Beach Gallery (the little wine store in Nye Beach) orders stuff for me or calls when she gets something special in. we also have a Cash & Carry, aka United Grocers. very good meats and prices but only in big hunks.

yes, it is beautiful here. I just hope they don't destroy this peaceful fishing village with all the building they're doing now. looks like they're trying to create the next Laguna Beach.

I've been to saturday market in Eugene. now I know where all the hippies went. I hadn't seen that much long hair and tie dyed clothing since Woodstock! '-))

Thanks Randi. I think chickweed can be eaten too and I have a fortune growing in my garden.
