Our duck couple is back in the pool. Spring is here, they just confirmed. Time to plant the herbs.

2 months of winter and it was just barely tolerable.

Eventually, after a month of cold weather, the rosemary finally gave in. Anybody else have rosemary that froze during the winter? I don't know whether it will return or if I should start again. The plant is now 3 years old so it should have a good root system.

grrr.... the only "one" potted! I have an over abundance of rosemary, if you

can imagine that being possible.

Did the rosemary have good snow cover for most of the winter? I bet if you cut it way back

it would come back if the roots didn't freeze. My garden still slumbers under 2 feet of snow. But, we are finally seeing above freezing temps this week. yay!

My rosemary never comes back - hey isn't it

"rosemary for memory"? Seems it forgets to come back!

The only way my rosemary survives the winter is if I bring it indoors. I keep it potted as

soon as there is a hint of frost in the air. A friend suggested I grind up some egg shells and add it to the soil and since doing that my rosemary has been growing amazingly well.

We've got a goose laying on our dock right now....

a lovely duck couple hanging around too - not to mention muskrats. Spring is definitely here!

I have to agree with Sylvia about a pot for rosemary...

it's a tender perennial and doens't like temperatures below 20 degrees F. I have had mine in a pot for many years, and I used to put it out in good weather, but quit doing that when I realized that it was the source of all the spider mites that infested my house plants every winter. Apparnetly it attracts them and if you dont' kill every last one before bringing it in, they will be happy and multiply in your house in the warm air.
So, I now just keep the pot in a sunny window all year.
I had not heard about the egg shells, but will be adding them to the soil.
As for the other herbs, my chives are sprouting, and I'm looking forward to a batch of Steve 2's Potato Chive cakes! YUM!
The thyme, sage, lovage, oregano and tarragon will be greening up soon.
I love spring!!!

I have a big pot of it inside too. Not happy about hearing of the bugs that go

with it. My bay laurel and hibiscus are both inundated with that mucky scale stuff. And I thoroughly sprayed the hibiscus with malathion before bringing it in. And I made sure any unwelcome visitor was picked off the laurel and washed it with soap. These bugs can be so discouraging.

Interesting also about egg shells. We compost them so all the garden gets them anyway.

I've cut this rosemary guy back close to the ground and hope for a Spring renewal. The sage and thyme don't mind the winter at all and are happily leafing away now.

We had only 2 months of winter Ang, but it got as cold as -2 F. We had snow on the ground for about a month. Seems to me that this is a long period for this part of the world. Usually we have slush.
