Perfect, cheap, easy Winter lunch: Julia's baked beans and cole slaw, with broiled sausage

I have regular lunch meetings with my community garden board, and when it's my turn to treat, I usually cook rather than pick a lunch spot, to save money and to make my employers feel all the more indebted to me.

It's been cold here (for L.A.) and this quick menu turned out really well:

Julia's crockpot baked beans: dump dried beans, water and other ingredients in a crockpot the night before, simmer 14 hours, serve. Any baked bean recipe could work here--just keep the proportions of beans and water the same. Prep time is about 15 minutes

Julia's cold slaw: It's flavorful and fat-free if you serve the dressing on the side. Prep time is about 20 minutes.

Sausage: Bratwurst from Trader Joe's and Safeway Brand Kielbasa on sale at Von's. (It turned out to be just as good as Hillshire Farms, so much so that I suspect they are the same. Hillshire Farms is a bargain at Costco but I didn't have time to go there.) I steamed the Brats until cooked through, then put them with the Kielbasa under a slow broiler, turning once. Prep time: 15 minutes. Served with Dijon Mustard.

sounds so good on this windy day! I made beans in the crockpot last night too---used adobo juice

leftover from the chicken for some of the liquid and then added a can of Rotel and some Hawaiian smokey spice, onions and celery and water. I wondered if the dry beans would get soft with the acid I put in at the beginning with the adobo and tomatoes, but they are tender as can be this morning. I didn't even soak them before adding to crockpot. go figure!
