Pet Peeve Redux: Give a posted recipe 5 stars and then give a laundry list of...

Just went to Epi from a yahoo search to try and find a recipe using Chinese Pickled Mustard Greens.

Saw a ton of "LOVED this dish. I didn't have this, so I did this. Didn't like this, so I substituted this. Only put a dash of this (instead of a cup) and added some of this to make up for it. Oh, and since we are vegan, we left the meat, chicken broth, eggs, and cheese out. Didn't miss any of it. We loved it!"

Goodness...

I get the same vibe from Yelp reviews.

We have a Chinese takeout joint about two blocks from our house. The food is DISGUSTING. My son and I tried it once, and several of my neighbors chimed in with the same opinions. Trust me. It is GROSS.

4 stars on Yelp.

How about those yelp reviewers that give a one star rating because. . .

of some spurious reason, like the the decor was ugly? At a place that is known to be rather bare-bones, not styled for a super night out? Known for excellent food though.
And some of those reviewers insult the wait staff and then wonder why their service sucked--you can tell by what they write in their reviews.

I love reading the bad reviews, they are hilarious. There is a chinese place by us that is family run, they are all always running the place. The man in the family is the cook and he cooks each dish to order, one by one. Considering this, I find their time to serving food to be quite reasonable. We always get everything piping hot, crunchy if it is supposed to be, fresh and delicious. Then I read bad reviews from people that had to wait more than a fast-food wait--what a bunch of slack-headed whiners! It is great when other reviewers call the idiots out for their bad reviews.

Sometimes I think people hate a place because of the weather, their shoes are too tight, they weren't able to get frisky last night . . .

Or even better, they give it 1 star and then list all the changes they made...

then complain because it didn't turn out right.

My fave was a bad post on Amazon for a product...because they couldn't get the box open easily.

A chef here gave an interview and mentioned getting a bad review on yelp because the customer

had a problem finding the restaurant after the hostess gave him directions. So he gave it one star.

What a laugh I got out of this thread. I think I have made a few recipes

from here and said I loved it but substituted something for what I had. It is easy to do. However, I also get upset with ratings in which the commenting person changes 50% of the recipe, leaves out the meat, adds more spices, etc. I use Amazon to check on products I am looking at buying, but some of their reviews are ridiculous. Like Cheez said, who can rate at transaction or a product poorly because the package was hard to open?

Here's another: would you exect a FOUR star rating (out of 5) if you read this:

"Damp and somewhat smelly, Not too much once cooked in a recipe. This however is what you have to put up with if you want to use fermented soy flour which is said to be better for you. Much of the odor dissipates when it has been opened a while, but it might shock you at first. Just don't expect soy that has been processed for a 5 star restaurant nose. Does that make sense?"
