was at Costco yesterday and they had a big display of international cheeses including Point Reyes (which is a local cheese here). PR is normally very expensive but Costco had a very good price. Two young girls next to me were saying it was a "ridiculous price" (in a good way). Also brought home some Spanish, French and Dutch cheese. They had the Moody Blue and another one which was a purple color -soaked in Cabernet. It was really excellent.
BTW Point Reyes also sells some other things like the best Pickles I've ever had. I make my own pickles so I don't say that lightly. The PR pickles come in a small jar of spears. A little hot kick to them... Not sure they sell those nationally though. They are not on their website which I've linked.
NY definitely has some great pickles. When I was a kid living on Long Island my father was in the restaurant business and among other things would bring home full (old-school wooden) pickle barrels. Haven't seen those in years but I've had a mind to repurposing some wine barrels...
Not sure I've seen them at Costco but you might be thinking of a good pickle on the sour side with all natural ingredients called: Bubbies. They are from Canada. They also make a good sauerkraut. I make both pickles and sauerkraut when I get the time - which are better than anything store bought but I like Bubbies. Point Reyes pickles are special though. I'll have to look for some and post a pic.
That got me thinking of a Jewish deli I used to go to at a mall Bayside, Queens called Ben's. My wife and I watched "Before the devil knows You're Dead" a couple of weeks ago. The jewelry store scenes were filmed there. Although PSH was amazing in Copote and other roles, this movie was a horrible, "what's the point movie" in my opinion... but anyway if you sit down at Ben's they'll serve you two types of pickles while you wait for your food. One is the typical sour pickle and the other a bright green very crisp pickle that is very lightly pickled. One of those nice NY thing that you don't find much of anywhere else. My two oldest just returned from NY with a couple dozen bagels. Hard to find real, good bagels outside of NY.
