porcini salami

Not sure if Columbus deli meats are available nationwide but I've been a fan since they first started. Wholesome ingredients, good quality with an artisan approach. My daughter who is allergic to just about everything (dairy, wheat, corn, soy, eggs...), can eat most of their products. In any event, I recently tried their limited edition Porcini salami and for me at least it is the most fantastic salami I've ever had. Worth a try if you can find it. It is not listed on their website so it must be pretty limited. I did see it on Amazon.com. I found it locally at Grocery Outlet at a great price.

p.s. The only problem with going into that store for one thing is that I never come OUT with just

one thing, lol. Sooo many good bargains to be had. So what could've been a $0.99 purchase turned into $37. smileys/wink.gif

great that you found it let me know if you enjoy it as much as I do

GO - is awesome. $0.99 right?!?

A lot of gourmet stuff mixed in with the otherwise bargain supermarket. I'm sure that $37 that you spent would be about 1/3 of the same stuff at a regular supermarket like Safeway - and forget Whole Foods where I think they have a cover charge of $37 smileys/wink.gif

Oooohhh, you get in to Whole Foods with only a $37 cover charge??? Do tell!!!

(heheh).

Yes, GO has lots of cool stuff at nice bargain prices (fresh produce, deli meats and cheeses, butter and dairy items, canned tomatoes and nuts, artisan coffee, and so much more). We often find great wines there marked down big-time. I've heard there's a contingent of folks who frequent the GOs (the one near me included) that go there with wine key in the car, purchase a few bottles to sample, take them to the car and "taste test" right there in the parking lot then return immediately to purchase more of what they like (one never knows how long a particular desired wine will be available -- they sell out quickly). The "wine guy" at this GO says it's quite the riot to witness and he's often there to guide them in their selections.

Already sampled the porcini salame (interesting spelling which I will have to research why it varies from "salami") and we like it a lot.

Thanks again, Paul for the recommendation. Please share other items you like as well.

another p.s. Paul, is there any problem for our site (or for YOU) with our embedding photos within a

post such as I did above with the salame photo? Was thrilled with Richard's post about how he successfully embedded photos... he said he made the picture appear by pasting the Direct link in the Image attachment field, so that's what I did. I wouldn't want to cause more issues so I will gladly refrain if it's not a good thing for a healthy swap. smileys/smile.gif

definitely some great wine deals they advertise wine days here but there are always good deals

when they advertise something popular it is gone before I get there

as for other items

Their single origin coffees are decent but I'm annoyed that they have started labeling them "light roast" and "medium roast" when they are all roasted pretty much the same at a medium-dark and personal preference is an actual light-medium for me. I don't like burnt Starbucks style coffee and do my own roasting as well so I'm pretty picky.

The thing with GO is a lot of stuff only shows up once in a while. They had these natural ramen noodle packs with no MSG in the mix and for a while they were only $0.10/pack. I bought several cases then maybe a year later they were selling them for $0.99/each which was still a decent price for these compared to Whole Foods. They also carry different stuff in different stores. We have 3 local and 4 if I want to travel to Novato. They seem to stock some of the better stuff in the Novato store (Marin county is so spoiled!)

I always look for the Luke's brand chips. All natural, no MSG. I normally don't love the salt & vinegar chips but in this case they are my favorite. The vinegar is subtle. I also make a beeline for the cheese section. Sometimes they have some real nice ones. Recently they've had some Gruyere for $4.99/lb where even at Costco I think it is more like $12+/lb. Got a nice English cheese variety pack recently which was fantastic.

Another brand I look for is the Humbolt dairy products. Of the Norcal dairies Strauss is my favorite but rarely if ever see that at GO but Humbolt is good as is Clover.
For ice cream try the "Three Twins" brand.

They also often have Amy's and Annie's brand stuff which is usually a good natural alternative to other frozen foods.

As you said some great wine deals but occasionally I'll pickup a nice brew there as well. Too bad they don't have a Tequila section.

Grocery Outlet has good deals, but they are known to treat food brokers very poorly. I stopped...

...offering them products even if it fit their buying model because of how they treated us brokers. If I knew a broker who would buy from me and then resell to Grocery Outlet, I wouldn't offer her/him any future deals.

Why?

Because Grocery Outlet's buyer would buy from a broker once, and then do everything in their power to cut that broker out of the next deal and go around them and steal their source. They were notoriously unethical and didn't even bat an eye. They were the kind of company that would sell their own grandmother for an extra three cents off.

Ugh. That was a number of years ago, so I hope they've changed their ways.

Perhaps they've changed their ways. Have heard good

things here, behind the scenes, about their business practices.

Thanks for the tips...

on Luke's chips and Three Twins ice cream....guess I'll have to go back to see if this store carries those. They had Strauss yogurt yesterday, and I picked up some lovely brie and prosciutto at screaming-good prices. Also some nice Applewood smoked bacon. They were out of the single origin coffee yesterday. It was *such* a good price and soooo delicious. I hope they bring it back. But like you say, things come and go.

Do you recall the brand of ramen?

I don't remember the ramen brand it was a while back and haven't seen it

Maybe they're different now. They certainly carry different items now organic produce for example.

But you still really need to keep up on top of the expiration dates they sell stuff very close to expiring.
