Pretty Brazilian lime tarts from a local food writer I know, and if I skip the meringue

Brings me memories...

... my oldest sister used to cook and bake a lot. One of her specialties was the lime tart. This is a very traditional Brazilian dessert, actually

believe it or not, I did not care for it when I was growing up - too tart for me, but now I wish I had been a little more adventurous in those days. She lost her passion for cooking many years ago, not sure why. Her daughter, however, is a great cook and loves to bake cakes. Clearly, she's got a different set of genes than mine.

How does the taste, or tartness differ from a key lime pie? The pastry looks very pale.

I've never heard of meringue made this way, heating the eggwhites and sugar first.

I never had a key lime pie...

.... but from the look and recipes I see, they are very very similar

it would be interesting to find out how the recipe ended up in Brazilian cuisine, as most desserts back there have a Portuguese origin.
