Question about canned of pasteurized crabmeat. I noticed a can that was in a fridge was bulging.

It had been in the fridge for some time but was still 7-8 months from it's use by date. It's the first time it's happened and I buy it often. I took it back to Costco and noticed when I picked up a new can that they had changed purveyors or packaging. Perhaps I wasn't the only one who had a problem. My question is, could the crabmeat have made us sick if we'd eaten it before it started bulging? Just something I've been wondering about.

Bulging is never good. I wouldn't take the chance.

Good thing Costco took it back- if a can is bulging there are gases or something making it happen. Maybe the crab was not cleaned properly- or something got in before the canning process. I don't always trust expiration dates.

I wonder if someone needs to be advised of this. It really is quite scary. No one would suspect and

it could easily have been malicious many months before due date and before the big bulge.

And never leave out the possibility that the cans were left out of refrigeration

for an extended period of time by some forgetful person in the chain from cannery to store. Happens all the time: sour milk before its sell by date, molded cheeses before the date. It's so easy to let the cartons sit on a loading dock, and then the culprits quickly put the tainted stuff back in stock before they are caught.

Curious, that is a good question if the contents would be dangerous before the can started expanding. I guess there might be a tip off of foul smell, but there are so many reasons why the contents were off.
