Question about chocolate and static electricity

Whenever I chop up a bar of chocolate, it seems to cause static electricity and I have pieces flying everywhere!! It's like that toy we had as a kid where you use the little wand to move the metal shavings. It makes such a mess. Anyone else have this problem and a solution?? I am chopping up a Trader Joes pound plus bar tomorrow and not looking forward to the mess.

Try chopping it some what warm-ish. . .

Hard, hard chocolate, at like cool room temp or out of the fridge or freezer always goes all over for me.

I find better results if the chocolate firm, but definitely warmed up, not so it is soft, but can be easily broken and breaks softly instead of cracking right out.

Ha! Except my pound plus bar would definitely be pound minus when he finished with it smileys/smile.gif

I've been using the chopper, thanks to you. But, of course, that's only for

moderately small chunks. I thought it was a brilliant idea of yours - so much easier and less messy than using a knife.

Brain storming...take a warm damp towel and wrap the packaged chocolate inside. There's a coffee

shop I frequent and they make Mexican mochas with Ibarra. They soften it by sitting it on top of their espresso machine. Granted it's a different kind of chocolate and a different heat source but a gentle heat from the towel should do the trick.

Then I use a serrated (bread) knife to cut the chocolate into manageable chunks. Over time my chunks have become more crude...and larger. Melting them in a water bath I've realized it really doesn't matter much. The larger chunks (quarter-sized) just take a little longer to melt. I'd rather take more time melting than chopping.

Another brain storm- try freezing the knife first. A cold blade will probably not create static elec

Me too - I HATE cleaning it. But, it comes in handy when making fresh salsa, pureeing stuff, etc.
