Question about LCBO's Food and Drink. Maybe Marg CDN, Olga, Shaun, or Mimi?

What do you think of this magazine? I've looked at the recipes on their website & they look pretty good. Was thinking about subscribing. What's your opinion of the magazine? Would you recommend it, or would you recommend just sticking with the website?

I'd stay with the website. Much of the content is local. The shopping bits and so on. It's a very

high quality mag but the recipes come out about a month later, reliably. And they are fine recipes.

It's extremely popular here. It used to disappear within a couple of days of publication so they had to start increasing production.

What do you like about it? Anything that you can't get online? It is only available in ONtario, not other parts of Canada.

Hey, that reminds me........what's happened to Ruth in Alberta?

I just liked the recipes I saw posted, but if all the ones in the magazine...

are duplicated at the site, I'll save my $30. Thanks, Marg!

you'll find a huge portion of it is advertising. many of the recipes are by lucy waverman...

she has a couple of cookbooks out (one coauthored with james chatto) and they both look quite good. if you like the sweets, many are by anna olson who also has a few books out, too.

maybe as a random act of kindness i could send you a copy every now and then? goodness knows i'm in the liquor store often enough... smileys/smile.gif

Thanks, wildwoods. I'll look at the cookbooks. (as if I don't own enough already...)

if only going to the liquor store had such redeeming qualities here. alas, I just find myself coming home with drink. will take you up on your kind offer if you find the chance & it's not too inconvenient. you're sweet to offer!

You would consider yourself fortunate, though, if you saw what we pay for liquor. Altho mags are

'free', it's the consumer (the local drinkers) who foot the bill.

sure andrea, i think a new issue should be coming out next month,

so i can send that along with the current issue (if i can still track down a copy). just pm me your address when you have a minute.

Personally I'm not a great fan ...

I pick it up occasionally but often don't bother these days. The photography is seductive, but none of the recipes I've tried are keepers. And because most of the recipes are written by the same person, you get that same approach or sensibility throughout--after a while it seems to lack variety. Even though it's free, I'd still spend money on Saveur or Gourmet or Fine Cooking or even Canadian Living first.

But it's better edited than the LCBO's newspaper inserts, where the recipes have things like "1/5 cup"...
