Question - what is your favorite cheese grater. I am thinking of a microplane style wide one but I

I like my fine Microplave for parmesan, ginger, chocolate, etc. & my Oxo box

For most other cheese, cucumner & whatever.

Soft cheeses and general grating purposes - OXO box grater with box cup at bottom

I love that I can grate it straight into that little box and know that I have a cup of cheese. I don't have to get a plate or the cutting board dirty and have bits of everything all around me. For harder things like parmesan, nutmeg, zest, ginger, etc. that you tend to want grated smaller, I love my various Microplanes.

Nix that - Cooks Illustrated doesn't like the newly redesigned OXO box grater

They made it so that the wholes are double sided allowing you to cut both going down and coming back and they said that caused things to stick in them. Mine is older so it's not made this way.

Highly recommended was the Rosle coarse grater - but it looks awkward to me - too flat to the counter surface. Recommended were the Microplane Specialty Series box grater but it doesn't do good on things like carrots. And the Cuisipro 4 sided box grater with bonus ginger base.

I will also say that for years the Tupperware grader was my favorite - you have to see it but it's a strange design. Worked great for a while - it's a flat plate that pops onto a sort of half sphere shaped cup/handle that catches whatever you are grating and also measures it. So easy to clean. But the cup/handle has enough flexibility that it allows the grating plate to pop out and that becomes a hassle. I think they are on to something if they can figure out a better way or material to make it snap together.

Thanks all. I will enjoy shopping. I have so much in my kitchen that I am happy when I can justify

a purchase!

I don't like my coarse microplane nearly as well as the fine one.

I would skip it in favor of a box grater.

I like the fine microplanes better, too. For a coarse cheese grater, I buy a cheap flat one from

the grocery store and replace when it gets dull.

My favorite cheese grater, by far is....

..... my husband

But I am not sharing him with anyone. smileys/smile.gif

Ditto for me too. I love my big box grater. I can have a

large head of cabbage cut down and shredded with the box in the time it would take to get food processor out and set up.

I have tried so many but keep returning to the box grater. I just appreciate the stability of it

when I`m using force and it works well for large or small amounts. For huge amounts I use the Cuisinart blade.

I have a microplane but it's too fine. I like the Oxo 4 sided one but I need a lot of counter space

this one is pretty close to another one I go to more often than not.

It has 4 different grating plates that fit into a plastic box and it's neat and tidy. I do break the plates eventually but they're so cheap that I don't mind replacing every bunch of years.

Glad somebody mentioned the Cuisinart! I have both shredder blades (fine & med) + the grater. For

smaller jobs for garnish or toppings, I like the Zyliss or a Microplane. (Note to Richard: My food processor is always out on the counter & ready to go to work!)

Ditto, Sarah!

His favorite graters are the box style for softer cheeses and a vintage curved grater for hard cheeses like romano and parmesan. The microplane gets used for ginger and citrus zests.
