Raw cheese recall with deaths involved. Please check.

There are way to many food recalls. What ever happened to quality control, and keeping a clean

environment?

Corporations will cut corners to increase profits...

that's why the United States created the EPA and the FDA: Supervision and control of the corporations who want to pollute the air, food, and water.

Unfortunately, it costs money to keep things safe. We all know who is responsible for the latest $300 million slash to the FDA budget and it will continue.

So, people dying means nothing to them? Do any of these people even eat the food they put out there

for the rest of us to consume? What a shame.

My grandfather was from Portugal and he had a small farm. Rabbits, goats, chickens, eggs. I recall when I was little and he was getting his vegetable garden plot ready, which was massive, he told me the animals must always be downhill from the food garden. Our garden was up high, next to the house and the two massive chicken houses were well below. Goats, and rabbits were down further, near a gully area. Rabbits were kept in large coups, and the goats ran free in the sun and grass, and kept the gully mowed down. My aunt also gardened and planted vegetables. The horses were kept down hill from the food, as well.. Of course those small plots were nothing compared to large agra now.

I'm afraid there are to many who don't know and sadly it will get

worse. Evidently we have to return to some bad times to understand why those things were put in place. sigh....

People are stupid too--just one person not washing their hands correctly, or not at all. . . (nt)

Your point is well taken, but I'm hoping this remains a politics-free zone.

FDA funding has suffered under the last three Administrations, at least.

It is my opinion that it should be split into two agencies, Food Safety and Drug Safety. Too much on their plates to do both correctly, as both are monumentally steep responsibilities. I'm not usually a fan of bigger government, but in this case it seems wise to split up the agency.

We are still the world's best at keeping things safe, but the agency is struggling and has been for many decades.

There's an interesting line in that article which says that in Europe where they make

so many raw milk cheeses, there are extra steps to safeguard the product (didn't say what they are) which are not done here in the US. But listeria has turned up in ice cream and milk in recent times--it is prevalent.
Here raw milk cheeses have to be aged 60 days (not sure how that helps--maybe Sally who IS an expert in listeria will chime in).
The other "stunning" thing is that in his first production, he aged it under the sidewalk!!

Why is this disappointing? The approach may have been beyond necessary, but it's an important topic.
