Coffee layer cake

Makes 2 8-inch layers

3 c cake flour

2 1/2 t baking powder

1/2 t salt

1/2 c shortening (tsk, substitute butter I suppose)

1 c sugar

3 eggs

1/2 t vanilla

1/2 cup cold strong brewed coffee

Sift flour. Measure and sift together with baking powder and salt. Cream shortening. Add sugar gradually, creaming after each addition. Add well-beaten eggs. Add vanilla and beat

thoroughly. Add dry ingredients alternately with the coffee to the creamed mixture, stirring just enough to blend thoroughly. Pour into well-greased pans and bake in moderate oven (375F) 20 to 25 mintues. Frost as desired.

This looks like what my mother used to make

I can remember arguing with my Home Ec teacher (I think I just dated myself, they don't call it Home Ec anymore) that coffee cake DID have coffee in it.
