RECIPE: REC: Baked Ribs with Hoisin BBQ Sauce...surprisingly good and can make again.

RECIPE:
Marg I can't find hoisin sauce anywhere in town (

I'm in Quebec. I am also ISO some Mexican ingredients (chipotles in adobo). There used to be a Canadian website that specialized in ethnic grocery type things but I can't find the site anymore. Are you familiar with anything like that?

There are some US-based online groceries like that but they don't ship to Canada. :eek:/ Darn them.

Does anyone have a good recipe for hoisin sauce?

I used to have one that used soy sauce, brown sugar and a few other ingredients, but can't seem to find it.

Sub for hoisin

hoisin sauce Notes: This is a sweet and garlicky bean sauce that's often used as a dipping sauce. Available in Asian markets and in many large supermarkets. To make your own: Visit the Hoisin Sauce posting on the RecipeSource site. Substitutes: Simmer for 12 minutes: ¾ C pitted prunes + 2 C water + 1 tablespoon crushed garlic, then add 1 ½ tablespoons soy sauce + 1 ½ tablespoons dry sherry and puree. (Adapted from recipe in Good & Plenty: America's New Home Cooking by Victoria Wise and Susanna Hoffman. See my sources.) OR ¼ C soy sauce + ¼ C plum sauce + 1 teaspoon flour + dash five-spice powder + dash garlic powder + sugar or honey to taste (From a usenet posting by Lynn M. Wiegard. See my sources.) OR chee hou sauce (spicier) OR apple butter (Thanks to reader Richard Nolles for this suggestion.) OR sweet bean sauce (spicier)

Pas possible!!! I'll ship you some if you want. Shopping is great in this city.

(and that's the only thing I like about it)

Let me know.

don't know of website.

Well, I should have, for my seriously diabetic husband. But, I think he just cranked up the volume

on his insulin that night.

At least there isn't any brown sugar in it.

Maybe trying to use Durward's sub for hoisin and working through it that way. Hoisin is such a distinctive flavour. Other than that, it's the 5-spice powder that provides the majority of the flavour. Do you have a sugar-free sub for the chili sauce?

Mimi, hoisin is sold at Loblaws, Dominion, etc.... le Loblaw, le Dominion. Are you sure? In the

oriental food section.

Oh great! There's a Loblaw's in Rouyn and I'm going there on Monday. Thanks for the tip!

If you don't have luck there -

it would be my pleasure to send you some, along with the chipotles en adobo amd any other Mexican or Asian ingredients you would like and cannot find.

I can walk to the market that has all you would ever want, and I would be delighted to do it!

Let me know.....

Thanks you guys for offering to send me some...

that is truly very kind! Actually, though, my mom lives in Arizona and sends me care packages from time to time. I would feel much more at ease sending mom to buy chipotles in adobo than you guys! ;o) But I'm so touched!

LOBLAWS is still around? Those are memories from my childhood...

Around here, Loblaws disappeared with A&P when I was about 3 feet tall! I remember they had a little play area in the front of the store where you could drop your kids off while you shopped. Unattended. That was before the days of what the wierdos do today. Now they have locked doors inside of the supervised children's room at the P&C stores where all sorts of buzzers and alarms go off if you enter without an escort. Kinda sad, but neccessary today I guess.
