No, not that Ellis Island - this is a recipe published in the SOS column in the LA Times from the casino in Vegas. These are simple ingredients but really addictive. I think the trick is their tender crisp texture and GARLIC, lots of it. Also note - the Times article said they used the entire amount of garlic salt - I used half and DH and I found it perfect. Start slow and taste as you go.

Dear SOS: There is a small off-Strip casino in Las Vegas called Ellis Island. Its cafe serves the most delicious green beans I’ve ever had. It seems like a simple preparation with butter and garlic, but all my attempts to duplicate it have fallen short. I'd be very grateful if you obtain this recipe.

Dear Sam,

Ellis Island Casino and Brewery was happy to share its recipe for green beans, and there is no shortage of garlic flavor. "The secret to the green beans is our own blend of garlic salt and fresh chopped garlic." the restaurant writes.

Ellis Island's Green Beans

1 pound green beans, trimmed

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon granulated garlic

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon chopped garlic

STEP 1

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the green beans and blanch until crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Immediately strain the beans and place in an ice bath to cool. When the beans are cool, drain and set aside.

STEP 2

Make the garlic salt: In a small bowl, combine the black pepper, onion powder, granulated garlic and salt. This makes a generous tablespoon garlic salt.

STEP 3

Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat until hot. Add the olive oil, then the chopped garlic, and cook until the garlic is aromatic, about 1 minute. Add the green beans and toss until warmed through. Remove from heat and toss in one-half of the garlic salt. Taste and add additional garlic salt as desired (we added almost all of it). Serve immediately.

These sound great and are going on my menu for Thanksgiving... I am shaking up our traditional

Thanksgiving this year. Doing two of Ina's lemon roasted chickens instead of turkey, these green beans instead of mine made with onion, garlic, bacon, and tomatoes. Not sure what else yet. I think I will make our favorite stuffed baked spuds instead of mashed potatoes and gravy.

so brave to shake things up on Thanksgiving! I think I'll try this Sunday with freezer anything

They'd be ideal for Thanksgiving - you can blanch and chill ahead, and finish them off right before

serving - and don't require an oven.

These might usurp the ubiquitous Green Bean Casserole this year at my house.
