Fry Bread
3 cups flour
1 Tbs. baking pwd.
1/2 tsp. salt
1 Tbs. shortening (I use butter)
1 to 1+1/4 cups cold water
oil for deep frying
Heat oil; it needs to be 360°F for frying by the time the dough is mixed.
Whisk together dry ingredients. Cut in shortening. Add cold water gradually until a soft dough is made. Roll out a handfull of dough to a thickness of 1/4 inch. Carefully drop into hot oil. Fry until golden on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
Usual topping choices:
honey
powdered sugar
cinnamon sugar
garlic butter
or
for Indian Tacos,
chili beans (I use taco seasoned beef also)
grated cheese
shredded lettuce
diced onion
diced tomatoes
Condiments usually offered with Indian tacos include salsa, sour cream and guacamole.
