Having no children of my own, I am a very happy and enthusiastic Uncle Bubba. When one of my little nephews asked me to make a Treacle Tart because that's Harry Potters favorite, I went to it with gusto. I tried several different variations, but found this simple version is not only probably the most authentic, but also the easiest. For those of you who've not tried this before, it should be treated like pecan pie, a little slice goes a long way. Enjoy!

Harry Potter's Treacle Tart

Pastry

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 pinch salt

1/4 lb. butter, chilled

2 Tbsps superfine sugar

1 large egg, lightly beaten

2 Tablespoons ice cold water

Filling

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger (do not use fresh)

1 cup Golden Syrup or light molasses

2 Tablespoons lemon juice (fresh)

Directions

Preheat oven to 400F

1. Prepare the pastry as for pie crust and chill for 30 minutes

2. Roll out for a 9 inch tart pan. Reserve the scraps. Trim the edges and retain scraps

3. Mix oats, zest, and ginger and sprinkle half in the pastry. Pour on the syrup and lemon

juice and sprinkle rest of oat mixture on top.

4 .Roll out any remanining pastry and cut strips to lay a trellis over the tart, if desired.

5. Bake 30 minutes and serve hot or cold. Garnish with whipped cream

NB I sometimes add a teaspoon of super finely grated orange zest to the oats mixture as well. I bought the Golden Syrup at Whole Foods but you can substitute molasses if you can't find it.

Welcome, Bubba! This tart could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Could it be made with any butter pastry? I usually have plain pie dough in the freezer.

Also, you may want to edit your post for the amount of flour, unless you really meant one-fourteenth.

Keep 'em coming!

Yum! I hope a recipe for Butterbeer is next. smileys/smile.gif

I certainly hope so..................................

I don't see why not Joe. Any type of pastry that would normally be used as a base for a wet ingredient filling will probably suffice.

Thanks for catching the typo for me. I corrected it.

As far as friendship goes I look forward to it and thanks.

Peace,
Bubba
