This sounds great, especially the sauce. I imagine it could be adapted easily - kind of like apple cobbler.

Pare and quarter 6 tart apples, then put them in a porcelain kettle, sprinkle with a cup of sugar, a dash of nutmeg, and a tablespoonful of butter; pour over them three pints of cold water and cook until tender.

Make a crust as for baking powder biscuits, roll out an inch thick, lay it over the apples, cover closely and boil rapidly for 15 minutes. Cut as you would cake, in wedge-shaped pieces, and serve with this sauce: Cook together two tablespoons of butter, one teaspoon of flour, and one cup of melted maple sugar.

AKA as Apple Dumplings. . . (more)

I have found a similar recipe where you cook the apples down to soupy apple sauce and then cook the dumplings on top. Haven't tried it yet, but sounds good!

I thought dumplings were more like boiled/steamed dough, and these seemed like they'd

be more like drier "biscuits" on top, like a fruit cobbler. After finding the recipe on an archived newspaper site, I googled "Knickerbocker Dainty" and didn't get one result! I'll be trying these later on in the week, and will report back...
