Foolish Sangria
I just made this for an April Fool’s Day party and everyone loved it - and then behaved foolishly. :> My husband is always asking me to make it.
One jug of Burgundy wine, no reason to buy expensive wine when you are doctoring it up so much
4 lemons, 4 oranges, 2 grapefruit sliced, 1 sliced apple, feel free to vary the fruit, more is better, but do not omit the grapefruit this adds some kind if bitter goodness.
frozen lemon aid concentrate, a few tablespoons
dashes of ground clove, allspice and when it’s cold out some cinnamon or a cinnamon stick
7-Up type soda
Sugar to taste, maybe 1-2 teaspoons, it really depends on the wine
I believe sangria really only reaches it full potential when made the day before. I think this is key! The fruit needs to macerate a bit in the wine. So, the day before you plan to serve, or even 2 days before pour wine over fruit in a pitcher and mash up a bit with a wooden spoon.
Stir in 2-4 tablespoons of frozen lemon aid concentrate
Sprinkle in a bit of ground allspice, clove, add in a whole cinnamon stick. Use a light hand on the spices.
For parties where I use 2 jugs of wine I then pour each batch into a double lock Ziploc bag and carefully place in the fridge.
Day of the party pour bags into punch bowl, fruit and all, and add soda to taste. I think I used ¼ to ½ a bottle of soda to one jug.
I like to serve by putting a fresh berry in each cup then lots of chopped ice and finally ladle the sangria over. For my last party I put a blackberry in each glass.
I am not exaggerating when I say people go crazy for this recipe and I have been working on it for years. I think 7-Up works better than other sodas and know-one has ever guessed I add spices.
I make my sangria low carb – diet soda and splenda to taste.
