RECIPE: REC: Sourdough bread and starter recipes - anyone do this or similar?

RECIPE:
Our son is baking and has talked about sourdough. I

got my starter in the 70's - long ago gone - from a friend. I was just wondering how practical it is to start from scratch? And whether this looked like a good recipe to share with him from those of you that bake? Colleen

A super good book for learning to bake bread and make sourdoughs and the

how and why of it all is Peter Reinhart's The Breadbaker's Apprentice. You might even look for a starter he recommends.

Winter/cold is not a good time to get a starter going. I couldn

I’d recommend looking on your local next-door app or even craigslist for a local bread maker to share some starter with you/him. Bread makers are always trying to figure out ways to use up leftover starter and would be more than happy to share. Also if you were to buy some starter don’t worry about where it comes from. It will acclimate To wherever you are so it doesn’t really make a difference.

Two really good websites about bread are freshloaf.com And BreadTopia.com. Peter Reinharts book that Charley mentions is a good one to learn about Bread math, which bread recipes are written in. They are also classes on Craftsy.com which I think is now called blueprint. There also free videos on YouTube but not all of them are the best bakers. Here is the demo master class with Chad Robertson of the famous tartine bakery in San Francisco. I found it helpful with shaping technique

Our own SallyBR Is wealth of information on sourdough and has many recipes and information on her site. Her blog post sourdough blues helped me revive many a near dead starter.

I will look on Craigslist/Freecycle - great idea

- and we greatly appreciate all of your resource suggestions. Sourdough bread and treats are in our future! Colleen
