Someone sent me this and it does sound like a great fun idea for a bunch of people..

"ZIPLOC OMELETS"

Have you ever heard of this? I've heard it works great! Good for when all your family is together and no one has to wait for their special omelet.

Have guests write their name on a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag with

permanent marker. Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (not more than 2)

shake to combine them. Put out a variety of ingredients such as: cheeses,

onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.

Each guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shake. Make

sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up. Place the bags into rolling,

boiling water for exactly 13 minutes. You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a

large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water. Open the bags and the

omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared for everyone to be amazed. Nice to

serve with fresh fruit and coffee cake; everyone gets involved in the process and

a great conversa tion piece.

Thanks for posting this Elaine. This sounds like this would be fun and easy to do with my family.

I forwarded this on to my cousins who are having a get together. I thought they would enjoy making these too. Thanks again!

Don't want to be a naysayer, but you have to make sure the bags (m)

are recommended microwave safe. Because of the varying temps of micro's, there is a possibility of chemicals being released into the food. I may be wrong, but I do not think Ziplock bags are ok'd for the micro.

Tried this and would not recommend it!

The "omlet" was tough and one of the nastiest things I have tasted.

Now that you mention that, 13 minutes in boiling water would be a

LONG time. I like soft eggs to begin with. Maybe 5 minutes.

I wouldn't recommend it because of all of the "plasticizers" that would end up in the food. . .

It's bad enough that plasticizers can be found in containers for storing food and in everything purchaseed in plastic, but boiling in a non-heating approved ziploc bag--nasty. I really feel this is not in your own best interests.

I could see trying the plastic like in those oven proof bags you cook turkeys in, but can you get those in a small size and can you seal them tight enough to keep the water out?

It would seem that these are quite food safe.1500* is where the problem comes.

Microwave safe plastics are food grade plastics (which do not leach plasticizers) that are known to be able to withstand higher than normal temperatures. Plastics that are not microwave safe may leach harmful substances when heated in a microwave oven. (There was an internet e-mail scare/hoax that was passed around claiming the USDA or FDA and independent researchers showed that dioxin (a plasticizer) leached out of plastic wrap onto food being microwaved. This is untrue since all microwave safe plastics are dioxin free. Saran and Ziploc both maintain that their product lines are completely plasticizer free. The temperatures necessary to create dioxin (around 1500°F) are beyond the normal operating conditions of household and commercial microwave ovens.)

We do this camping, but drop the sealed bags into our simmering coffee pot.

It takes a little longer to cook, but we don't have any melting danger that way. And there's no mess to clean up afterward...best part when camping!

Tried this at Easter for our kids and families, did as you posted, had lots of

additions, like cheese, cilantro, chilie, tomatoes, olives, etc. and made sure everyone added between 1/2 to 1 cup. We had eight bags in a big stockpot and 13 minutes was perfect. They were yummy, moist and tender.
