Recommend: Olga's Pea Soup, but made without pigs feet

I often make a similar soup but without the bacon (too much fat for us). I keep smoked neck bones

in the freezer and tie a few in a cheese cloth and add it to the first cooking. The neck bones are not as fatty as a ham hock. Sometimes I use half lentils and half peas. Good that way too.

 
When I make pea soup I often use either leftover ham and a bone or I cut up smoked sausage

both for seasoning and for some meat in the dish.
