I wanted to make a big batch of spaghetti red meat sauce for us AND some vegan marinara for my son. Perused Smart'N'Final's selections in the gigantor #10 cans (106 oz or there abouts). I bought the ground tomatoes in puree.
This stuff was a fantastic red color in the can. It looked to be the exact same color of good, ripe, summer-grown red tomatoes. It was very thick, very nice. Upon tasting from the can, it was a good sweet tomato flavor, so sweet that I checked the ingredients: nothing there except tomatoes, tomato puree, citric acid and salt. This stuff was great!
This was very pleasing to me as I have had other tomato product from other manufacturers come out way too sour (too much citric acid? too under ripe?). This will be purchased again.
Both my sauces came out wonderfully. I highly recommend this if you wish to make a lot of red sauce, meat or marinara!
