Regarding the Chinese garlic string above, the US almost went to war over it!

I got this info through non-official channels. Mostly banking contacts internationally.

China was dumping huge quantities of government subsidized garlic onto the American market in an attempt to put US garlic growers out of business. The US government sent a message to the Chinese through the highest diplomatic channels stating their most vehement objections, and told China they would enact immediate import tariffs or a complete trade embargo on all garlic shipments from China if they didn't knock it off.

China got pissy and told the US if they did enact tariffs or interfered with the imports in any way, China would begin to call all of our debt "due and payable", collapse the dollar, and bankrupt the United States within 6 months.

The US responded directly to China's leaders, saying that the US would consider that to be an "act of war" and respond accordingly.

The Chinese backed down.

It appears there are still issues with Chinese garlic, and I don't buy it.

hard not to buy stuff made in China but I avoid everything and

I've only made one exception when it comes to food. The "USDA Certified Organic" Chestnuts from Costco. These really tick me off because A) The packaging with the USDA boldly featured makes it appear to be an American grown product. smileys/cool.gif because I love them and I buy them despite the deceptive practices and my otherwise pretty good efforts to avoid the China zeitgeist...

I am fastidious at the supermarket and so is my wife about not buying any foodstuffs made/originated from China. When you do this you end up finding a lot of little tricks being used in packaging like stuff being called things like "Oregon Farms" (from China) or "Georgia Peach" (from China) Locally they are battling water Fluoridation and apparently one of the major objections is that the Fluoride is imported from Chinese waste bi-products. Sounds like some kind of urban myth but I've read the literature and it is true. Really disturbing.

Wow, Scary. I read a tip recently that you can spot garlic from China, in case it's not labeled at

the store by looking at the root end. They trim all of the root strands off, so the bottom is smooth. That's my "siren" warning to keep walking!
