a food mecca, but somehow you drive 25 miles west and suddenly...
(Here's what happened today when I decided to make BHG's "Beet and Onion Jam Galette" with a walnut crust. {linked})
Me to Walmart employee re-stocking fresh vegetables: "Sir, do you have any beets? I'm not seeing any and wondered if there were any in the back?"
Stocker: "Beets? You mean in a can?"
Me: (pausing, as we are both virtually STANDING in the fresh vegetable section)..."ah, no...fresh beets."
Stocker: "Beets? Are they red?"
Me: "Yes! Sometimes they have large reddish-green leaves still attached."
(I should have realized at that point I lost him.)
Stocker: "Red...red...here!" And he hands me a plastic sealed bag of...radishes.
Me: "No...those are radishes. Beets are much bigger. They grown in the ground...so sometimes they look dirty..."
(...and we walking and we're looking...)
Stocker: Here! And he hands me a bunch of...fresh radishes with the greens still attached.
Me: "No...again, those are fresh radishes."
At this point I thanked him, said I'd buy some canned beets and left Dodge to drive next door to Ingles.
Found fresh beets (no greens, which is disappointing since they are really tasty when sautéed) for $2.98/pound. Bagged up a pound and went to check out.
Checker looked at the beets, didn't see a UPC symbol, looked up his list and charged me for...turnips roots for $0.69/pound. I paused and then corrected him, saying "Sorry...I'm going to hate myself for this, but those aren't turnip roots...they're beets. And they're $2.98 a pound, so much more than you charged me.
He cancelled out the entry, pulled out his list, looked, flipped it over, looked, pulled out a second list and finally, praise the UPC world, found beets and charged me accordingly.
Good Lord, I hope this galette is worth this.
