Remember when I said this wasn't an innovative culinary area? I'm west of Asheville, which IS

a food mecca, but somehow you drive 25 miles west and suddenly...

(Here's what happened today when I decided to make BHG's "Beet and Onion Jam Galette" with a walnut crust. {linked})

Me to Walmart employee re-stocking fresh vegetables: "Sir, do you have any beets? I'm not seeing any and wondered if there were any in the back?"

Stocker: "Beets? You mean in a can?"

Me: (pausing, as we are both virtually STANDING in the fresh vegetable section)..."ah, no...fresh beets."

Stocker: "Beets? Are they red?"

Me: "Yes! Sometimes they have large reddish-green leaves still attached."

(I should have realized at that point I lost him.)

Stocker: "Red...red...here!" And he hands me a plastic sealed bag of...radishes.

Me: "No...those are radishes. Beets are much bigger. They grown in the ground...so sometimes they look dirty..."

(...and we walking and we're looking...)

Stocker: Here! And he hands me a bunch of...fresh radishes with the greens still attached.

Me: "No...again, those are fresh radishes."

At this point I thanked him, said I'd buy some canned beets and left Dodge to drive next door to Ingles.

Found fresh beets (no greens, which is disappointing since they are really tasty when sautéed) for $2.98/pound. Bagged up a pound and went to check out.

Checker looked at the beets, didn't see a UPC symbol, looked up his list and charged me for...turnips roots for $0.69/pound. I paused and then corrected him, saying "Sorry...I'm going to hate myself for this, but those aren't turnip roots...they're beets. And they're $2.98 a pound, so much more than you charged me.

He cancelled out the entry, pulled out his list, looked, flipped it over, looked, pulled out a second list and finally, praise the UPC world, found beets and charged me accordingly.

Good Lord, I hope this galette is worth this.

Laughing out loud as I am responding.....here it is a problem with the cashiers not knowing what

Radicchio is....always want to charge me for Red Cabbage and have to correct them.....I just cannot believe Radicchio is mistaken for Red Cabbage.....I am always prepared now on the check out line and say it is Radicchio when they grab it.....LOL

BTW the recipe reads Delicious.....

This could happen in Charlotte also. Some kids just haven't had a lot of exposure. The schools in

normal times are planting gardens to give kids the idea that all veggies don't come in cans, etc.
Many of the servers in our retirement community dining room, many of whom are GREAT kids from the high school across the street, have had to be shown how to set the tables--and explain the food to some adults!!
I remember a market we had here which was done by a non-profit that supports veggie markets in food deserts around Charlotte. As a fund raiser they brought fresh veggies we could "buy" for a donation--one of our residents did not know okra in the pod although it was regularly on our menu.
YOu just never know.
