Was terrific (my aunt said that was one of those "keeper" recipes). Here are some other things that I think it would be great for:
Coarsely chop the onions instead of quartering them. Add a little more cheese to the top and maybe some crumbled bacon and even a few chopped toasted walnuts and serve as a hot spread for baguette slices or crackers.
Stir the sauce into the onions, spread on baguette slices, toasted or not, sprinkle with the cheeses and brown under the broiler for an appetizer.
Stir the sauce into the onions, spoon into little pastry shells or filo tartelette shells, top with a sprinkle of cheese and heat in the oven for hot appetizers.
