Sabering champagne? Has anyone here done this? I shuddered watching the demo video.

Really Pat. That is one of the most idiotic methods I've ever seen. It certainly doesn't exemplify

a "Fine Cooking" magazine. For a comic strip like Beavis and Butthead, it would be appropriate.

I watched it, thinking "ARE YOU KIDDING??!?"

Could not believe it was on Fine Cooking. do glass shards make it's way into your champagne, as well as all over the ground??

And it looked like they were in a public park....

I haven't done it, but a couple of restos on our trip to France did this for service...

Definitely a conversation starter!

Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Joanie. Sabering has been done for a very long time-

I've seen references to it from the 1800s in books. Dangerous yes and not so much in vogue these days.

Right...I asked that tongue in cheek...Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the Midday Sun

Lived in the tropics and always told that when young (+- 6 )I would slip out of my afternoon nap room and run on the lawn singing that.
I remember keeping a sharp eye out for the hippos that sometimes wandered up through the mealie fields just on the otherside of the fence. They never did come right up to the fence of course.
What a strange memory.......

Ok, I'm a little twisted...rather liked it, but have horrible VISIONS of

the same kind of clowns who drink flaming shots with facial hair having saber-fests with champagne... I can see where it could be a celebrated presentation...done with proper aplomb...but this wasn't it. Thanks for sharing Pat!!

I watched an old Shirley Temple movie, Wee Willie Winkie, set in India and hats were mandatory.

the midday sun comment made me think of this.

I've seen this lots of times when I worked at the winery

often at the end of the tour they'd do this as a big ta-da kicking off the wine tasting. Doesn't look hard, I've even see it done with the stem of a wine glass. I've tried it once long ago - it was scary but successfull. However you tend to lose more wine and that put a stop to it for me! Also, it must be really cold as the contents under pressure do most of the work for you.

Not smart: 1. Moving sharp side of blade towards body: 2. Holding bottle while breaking! 3. Drink

ing glass shards, anyone?? I don't think so!
