Salmonella Warning in Onions CDC

Thank you Ruth. I believe we are in the same city so I appreciate

having this information. (Edmonton)

Oh geez Ruth. I intended to buy a red onion today but with trepidation. Thank you for the update.

Farmers Market here is loaded with red onions right now. I am out and wanted to buy some

but they were so huge, I decided against it. Not sure why anyone would want such a huge onion, they seem to keep fairly well, but when I use onion, I prefer to use the entire thing.

Thank you for all for your kind thoughts. She is out of hospital now so things are looking up.

The sick family member lives in our city, Betty, and she did eat red onions prior to getting sick.

However, she doesn't have confirmation that the onions were the source of her infection. She went into the ER for another problem which masked the salmonella symptoms. The salmonella diagnosis was unexpected. It was picked up by the blood test they ran. .

Glad you caught the message in time! I bought a red onion on Thursday - into the trash it went.

That is good. The "problem" with Salmonella is that it is caused by a toxin and

that toxin isn't always destroyed by heat, so even cooked food can be dangerous.

ALL onions now

I see the CDC updated your Additional Information link on Aug 18 and it includes "red, yellow, white, and sweet yellow onions."

We got an email yesterday from Costco about the yellow onions we bought there saying not to use them and they'd give a refund.
