Even though I totally screwed up the instructions! That's what I get for trying to cook something before finishing the Z-pak of antibiotics.
Went with the reduced-quantity recipe (the one with 3 yolks) and dumped the sugar, cornstarch, juices AND yolks all together. Then I saw the instructions said to boil the cornstarch first and add the yolks later.
Oh well. Obviously the time-released portion of the drugs hadn't time-released yet.
I whisked it continuously and it took about 3 minutes to thicken. At that stage the color was a bit insipid-looking with a distinct cornstarch taste, but then I added in the butter pieces and the two zests and...whammo!! the color jumped right out and the cornstarch flavor was masked.
If I still feel like standing upright tomorrow, I'm trying it with cheezz's cream scones...although Welsh cakes are calling out to me too.
Thank you both.
Filled 2 4-oz jars.
PS: The vanilla sugar scent is heavenly. Could have just stood there, smelly that and been happy.
