This is a fairly normal Saturday Six, which makes me feel guilty, as we're surrounded by a tri-state area with decidedly non-normal nights, days, and meals for people. smileys/frown.gif Hope all my fellow East Coasters (heck, the storm went up to Canada, so pretty much anyone east of the Mississippi) are warm and dry, and with power tonight...
1. Husband came down with my cold from last week today, so lunch was chicken soup with noodles and croutons from last night's focaccia. Dinner was vegetable soup with mushroom pizza. Exciting, I know.
2. We had thought friends from downtown were coming to dinner last night (and to shower and soak up some radiator heat, neither of which they had 'til today), so I stocked up on salmon (half-off at WF! Please God, not due to food-storage issues), green beans, onion focaccia, and made apple cake from an Australian cookbook. Then we discovered that the friends were staying put, so we invited my brother and his fiancee to dinner, and added Israeli couscous with shallots and chickpeas to the menu. Brother and fiancee were only 20 minutes late. smileys/wink.gif
3. Guests brought two kinds of chocolate: Almond and Sea Salt, and Earl Grey. Also, mochi ice cream. All tardiness forgiven...
4. Dessert last night was the apple cake. It was very good--better this morning. The original recipe called for canned peaches (no, thank you), but I chopped about three apples and used those instead. Then drizzled with whiskey (no Calvados on hand) and topped with the recipe's suggestion of a crushed-gingersnap streusel. Turned out pretty well--a little on the dry side, partly because I overbaked it (per usual), and partly because I probably underestimated the amount of liquid in the original recipe's use of canned peaches. Also, it has about a cup of almond meal in it. But it's very nice if you warm it up and serve it with coffee. I just need to write down my tweaks to the recipe...
5. Weekend breakfasts: warmed croissant half with ham and cheese; waffle with blackberries and blueberry yogurt.
6. Saw this on the Food 52 blog and thought it looked tasty: Mushroom Bourguignon.
Ran across this somewhere and thought it, too, looked good: Lemon Artichoke Chicken.
Thinking of everyone who doesn't have a warm meal and a cozy place to enjoy it... The NYC Food Truck Association, working with JetBlue, has raised close to $20K to schedule food-truck deliveries to communities stranded in the wake of the hurricane. Yes, they've exceeded their initial fundraising goal, but it's a great way to sponsor a meal for someone. You can donate here 'til midnight tonight. Click on the "Updates" tab for a detailed description of their plans. For example, they have a truck delivering grilled cheese and tomato soup to the Rockaways tomorrow, and one delivering waffles and hot chocolate/coffee to Staten Island. Seven dollars sponsors a meal!
