Saturday Six

Saturday Six

Made a most delicious pork roast all for myself.
Have been nibbling away since morning. Trying it
on a sandwich, with veggies, just sliced. Loving this. I must freeze the rest immediately or it will disappear.
Baked the first part of 3 yr. old grandson's birthday cake. Will put it in freezer soon. I am making a building block cake for him so I hope to
use only 2 cakes and cut the blocks into shapes.
Also made Apricot Almond Biscotti to take
as a brunch gift. Then I decided not to go!! Have
put all those away or disaster would be setting in.
Emptied my refridgerator and threw out so
many outdated things. Also from the freezer. Feels good and makes for a good excuse to shop.
Finished up layout for book I am writing for the 3 yr. old.
Now I am ready for reading and TV.

My Saturday Six

1. Wake up to 4 inches of snow. Swear.

2. Watch news and realize that there is only snow at our house... the local news is actually reporting live from about a mile away from my house. Swear some more.

3. Re-tackle the Navy Bean and Ham Soup I made yesterday in a crockpot. I foolishly believed a blogger when she said I could cook it for 8 hours w/out soaking the beans first. I cooked it 10, the beans are still too firm. Refrigerated it overnight and will see where we are today. This will probably involve more swearing.

4. Calm myself by wasting several hours on Pinterest. And a nice warm bath. There may be wine involved.

5. Make grocery lists for next weekends Soup Swap. Try not to panic at the rising guest list due to the "more the merrier" vibe I threw out there without really considering that people would take that to heart.

6. Finish putting the Christmas stuff away. This absolutely must happen.

Saturday Six

1. Made chili last night. Too spicy. I can handle it, but I might be eating it for the next week for lunch if it's too spicy for J.

2. Went out for Thai for lunch; duck with noodles and wonton noodle soup. I'm not sure how accurate the notion of a Thai wonton is, but it was good. (No doubt there are Thai dumplings, but wontons?)

3. I realized today (or, realized long ago and am only admitting today) that I have the freezer version of hoarding, possibly as a result of growing up (in part) somewhere where you always make sure you have 3-4 days' worth of frozen food in winter, in case you're snowed in. This doesn't really make a lot of sense if you live in a giant city in the Northeast where a handful of things are open 24/7 even in the worst weather, but it's apparently hard-wired into me and now it's impossible to see the back of the freezer because it's crammed full of things. We could live for a month on what's in the freezer, and why we just don't is a conundrum...

4. Those of you who subscribe to the New Yorker magazine will love the food-emporium article, this week. smileys/smile.gif My heart belongs to FreshDirect.

5. Breakfast tomorrow: overnight brioche French toast with blackberries.

6. After two weeks of owning a new (to us) espresso machine, I can now make a passable cappuccino and am no longer downing three espressos a day out of sheer novelty. Hurray!

Happy weekend to all--

Saturday Six in No. CA

I think I've finally figured out what Saturday Six is! YAY! *giggle*

1) Indulge in coffee...as much as I need to enjoy the day!

2) Thaw fish for Sole Veronique for tonight...I can only keep hubby out of the grapes for so long...bought him mandarins to help me out!

3) Bake bread...don't know which yet. Headed for the books.

4) In the mood for soup...minestrone? Or Pasta e Fagioli? They both sound really good right now.

5) Play with my horses and check out the garden... With 60°+ weather...it's hard not to jump the gun!

6) Explore to see where "that" road leads... There's a new "dirt road" that I can see winding up the hillside nearby. I think it's time to see where it starts...then I can find out where it ends! I'm hoping it's a new equestrian path!

2 of my 6 will also include horses.

1. I've got to change a bandage on one of my husband's TB racehorses. He kicked a fence while home on vacation resulting in a night in the hospital and a much longer vacation.
2. Will ride my QH, Shorty. I'm sure the trails at your house are much, much lovelier than mine. There is a park with great trails nearby but I never go there alone.

Saturday Six

1. Went to a "new" (to me) store in town, Natural Grocers. Amazing! Sort of a Whole Foods, but a tad less pricey. They have ostrich meat, elk meat, deboned quail (all this stuff is frozen), but I could not find duck. Maybe I missed it.

2. Made a very nice tilapia recipe, using a bread crumb/citrus coating, in the oven instead of fried. Lighter, and very delicious

3. Made baguettes, using Hamelman's method of 6 foldings over a 3 hour period. In the process, I proved that a person of average intelligence can make the exact same mistake more than once. More than twice. Third time. Forgot to coat the surface where the baguettes were proofing after shaping. They stuck. I ruined the surface of the bread. Taste is good, I am going to repeat next weekend.

4. Tomorrow dinner will be pork ragu over pasta. Will make the ragu in the morning.

5. Did my exercises for the day.

6. Washed the dog beds, washed two of our three dogs, and begged them not to roll on anything smelly while in the backyard. They listened, but made no promises.

Saturday Six

1. Mixed bean and barley soup

2. Gretchen's pulled pork, for the first time, it's awesome, but must be saved for tomorrow's dinner...

3. Gretchen's BBQ sauce, a bit too vinegary, but I may have read the recipe wrong - 32 oz ketchup, one ketchup bottle of apple cider vinegar (I assumed it would be the same 32 oz?) Will try and fix it tomorrow, if not, a bottle will do!

4. Corn muffins, greased the tins with duck fat...

5. Malbec

6. Merlot

Not six - just one - lazy all day, but...I just made incredibly delicious chocolate croissants -

the easy way.

I took already-made, good quality plain croissants, slit them almost all the way open, sprinkled on finely chopped semi-sweet chocolate, closed them up, and heated them until the tops were crispy and the chocolate melted. OMG! Insanely delicious!

I see a trip to Norman in my future!

I can occasionally order duck from a vendor at the farmer's market. Let me know if you want one. I have 2 in my freezer. I'm going to thaw them the next time there is several days in a row of bad weather predicted.

Something to consider for your March haircut....

.... maybe you could come to Norman and check that store out? I was very impressed...

Weekend Six

Last minute birthday cake: John Thorne Chocolate Cake with a dairy free chocolate frosting. (I had to wing this...crisco melted with cocoa powder, vanilla, salt, coconut milk and powdered sugar.)

Tomorrow I am roasting a chicken. I know this is supposed to be simple, and even tho I make a great roasted turkey, I have had issues with chicken. But this year I am facing my food fears, starting with the simple roasted chicken. Going very simple: room temp chx, dried, salt and pepper, roast at 425 for 15 minutes per pound. And fingers crossed.

Broccoli
Smashed Crispy Potatoes
Lemon Tart
Rolls

Sure! (more inside)

if you want to change and do the Norman store this week, it's fine with me, so just let me know, I can either drive to Whole Foods and meet you there, or go to In the Raw

There is one trail up in the canyon near the dam...

I was actually approached to sign up as a trail volunteer...she obviously doesn't know my horses! LOL! We have 2 mustang mares...they were a delight to watch, but trust me, no one would have been on either of their backs for long this morning! There's another equestrian center about...maybe 10 miles away that I'm dying to visit! The new trail I'm seeing meanders up one of the hills behind a St. Recreation area. Saturday is over...but this is a 3 day weekend!

I love how you talk to your dogs. dh thinks I am crazy. Had a discussion w. Teddy about good

behavior for our party last night. She still ended up snapping at my friend, but in Teddy's defense, it was REALLY late.
