Saturday Six

1. I made this pumpkin pound cake recipe (after a successful, and lovely, lunch at La Promenade des Anglais with SandrainNY): http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/342916 I added ginger, fresh-grated nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon. It's a keeper--great with coffee!

2. Saturday nights now seem to be either Thai or pizza night for us: we made pizza topped with sauteed red onions, broccoli, uncured ham, and mushrooms (plus the obligatory mozzarella and parmesan). An odd mixture, maybe, but very good.

3. Did you know you can order an entire *side* of Atlantic salmon from Fresh Direct? Once I break that down into small dinner-sized pieces (say, half the size of a restaurant dinner entree), it becomes a very, very good deal. It's farm, not wild, but it's still more fish than we'd see otherwise.

4. In the last couple of weeks, I've discovered that we live about a block away from the Midtown branch of one of my favorite Chinese places. And they deliver. This is a problem.

5. I don't think there were any dining scenes in last week's "Downton Abbey," which was disappointing (though understandable--no more fancy dinners during wartime)...

6. Nothing terribly exciting planned for tomorrow (I'm recovering from a cold), but the makings for chicken soup are in the fridge, so maybe if I can muster the energy to peel and chop, I'll attack that.

Happy weekend--

Which Chinese is that?

we are currently in the market for a new one, our favourite local just put a "grade pending" up in their window smileys/frown.gif

Weekend 6.....

1. From Good to the Grain: Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies made with only whole wheat. They are quite delicious, I used regular whole wheat, not white. They have a coarser texture. They need some nuts next time.

2. From the same book is Gingersnaps made with 1/2 whole wheat, again not the white one. These little bites are delicious, again the texture is a little more coarse than regular. I like little chips of crystalized ginger in my gingersnaps and will add some next time.

These two recipes have been good for me to try. As I have only used white whole wheat in my baking. Now I have a better idea for the coarser texture lended by regular whole wheat--all new to me!

3. Next up is Sweet Potato Muffins made with 1/2 whole wheat. As I bake my way thru the whole wheat chapter. I am anxious to try these.

4. Joe's pork tenderloin will hopefully be for dinner.

5. If time allows, a Three Citrus Marmalade from the same Grain cookbook. Made with oranges, blood oranges, and Meyer Lemons.

6. I am also trying to emulate a whole white dinner roll that is sold at a farm in MD and is the best I have ever had. I have no talent for yeast baking. So I tried two different recipes. The first went in the trash, it was lumpy, not mixed well and and wouldn't rise. Next was a bit better and tastes okay but still not the same as the ones from the farm!

Mmm, pumkin bread sounds nice. My Saturday/Weekend Six

1. Sat. a.m I went to a bake sale for group I'm involved in... attempted "gourmet" cupcakes from a mix endorsed by GH. I ended up making Dawn_MO's Reese's bars. Yes, they do go quickly! Thanks for posting, Dawn and Karen =^..^= I vote for them to go into the T&T if they aren't there already.

2. Tried a quiche chard recipe whose ingredients included nutmeg, and cinnamon. My new food adventure for the week. So-so, I just think I'm sick of eggs. Will try steamed chard later in the week. I love kale, so the chard should be similar, I'm thinking.

3. Having some kids over to watch the first half of the Superbowl tonight. Chili, baked potatoes with make-your-own-toppings, Steve's corn muffins, the mandatory guacamole, and probably hummus. The latter 2 will most likely be enjoyed by DH and I during the second half, with a couple of "Bud Platinums(?)". I'm not usually a beer drinker, but it is very, very good, and low-cal.

4. Breakfast was a slice of date bread purchased at said bake sale, along with a good cup of coffee and some Greek yogurt. Ahh...

5. Lunch will be a chicken barbeque take-out from local American Legion's annual Superbowl Sunday fundraiser. Always good.

6. Afternoon plans include catching up on a couple of episodes of "Revenge" - I've fallen asleep and/or forgot it was on for 3 weeks now! Love that show... so addictive!

You mean "whole wheat" rolls? Chances are, the one you liked at the restaurant had quite a bit of

white flour in it. That allows for a more tender and higher-rising dough. Look for a bread dough recipe with some honey or sorghum in it for an enhanced flavor.

Ooh, I like the idea of adding chopped crystallized ginger to gingersnaps! Great tip. smileys/smile.gif

Me Four! I live for Sundays. Elizabeth McGovern and Maggie Smith are so fantastic together.

Well I will be going there at some point while I'm in NYC...

and I'll also be going back out to the Golden Food Labrinth in Flushing where we went before. Gotta have that food again! So we can go to one of those or any place you and Erin decide on, I'm game!

I will definitely not be low-carbing on this visit. smileys/smile.gif
