Saturday Six

The outdoor party yesterday went really good. I made 3 different types of hummus: sun-dried tomato, plain (lemon), and pesto hummus. The I swirled the first 2 together (altho a little thick, it looked pretty) and topped with Italian parsley. The pesto one I topped with a basil leaf. Really easy, very good. Lemon is my favorite (with lemon zest in it).

Another hit was orange dream? or at least some kind of orange jello with whipped cream in it. Must find the recipe online (probably posted here somewhere!) because I'm not sure who brought it.

Bees' Knees cocktails were also a hit. (gin, honey, lemon) http://www.westernlivingmagazine.com/FD/0513.Bees-Knees-Cocktail-Recipe.html

Finally broke the 90-degree temperatures (yayyyy). Today it's a comfy 74.

We picked blueberries - love them, and they are so big and juicy. At $1.50/lb too, a real bargain!

Tonight is salmon curry salad, Mexican corn-on-the-cob, coleslaw, carrots with tarragon (from the garden), and watermelon. I love summer...

Oh, man, Bees' Knees... My M.A. was fueled by many of those (in jam jars).

Saturday Six

1. I've adapted "Vegan Before 6" to "Vegan Before 6, and the Weekends are a Toss-Up." Had an almond croissant for breakfast this morning (as opposed to the usual oats soaked in milk, with berries) and I felt like I was walking through sludge, all day. smileys/frown.gif Farewell, morning pastry...

2. Dinner tonight: omelet with parsley and Parmesan, baguette with Fromager d'Affinois (I would eat my own arm if it were made of this), green pepper slices, tomatoes, boiled new potatoes with butter.

3. I have no idea what dinner was, last night--steak kabobs on brown rice, maybe--but eating it woke up the baby. smileys/frown.gif Darn you, utensils and plates!

4. Saturday mornings are mine MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE (ahem, excuse me), so I cheated on the vegan thing and went and had a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich with tomato and avocado, and read for an hour. smileys/smile.gif In the sandwich shop. two men I initially thought were homeless (but, upon eavesdropping, realized were journalists) were enumerating FDR's New York City residences. smileys/boggle.gif

5. Had a lousy pesto and tortellini salad for lunch today from an establishment whose name rhymes with Wahoochies.

6. Had excellent paella and tapas (not in that order) on Thursday night with Elaine and Sandra!! smileys/smile.gif Barb, we missed you!

My Sunday six- bake,bake,bake,bake, stew, roast

I have board meetings starting tomorrow at work- we'll have three boards and about 25 board members all doing different stuff for the next five days. I've been preparing for weeks. I got out of control today and baked goodies for morning coffee and also for dessert after lunch. I baked three pans of Seven Layer Bars, a double batch of Toll House Cookie Bars, then I did all the prep and put together the crock pot cassoulet to plug in tomorrow then I marinated a pork tenderloin to have tonight for dinner with fresh corn on the cob, avocado "fries" and tomato salad with pesto. The crock pot cassoulet and the pork tenderloin are for me and my DH, not the board smileys/smile.gif they just get the sweet stuff.

Jeez it was fun!

Weekend six

1. Attempted to make a slightly unusual sourdough bread, "Overnight Country Blond". Complete failure. Turned out as a sourdough pancake of sorts.

2. Party for the whole lab at home, potluck style. I made a traditional Brazilian recipe called "farofa" - manioc flour sauteed with a bunch of tasty stuff. If you've never had farofa, it is hard to describe it. Everybody loved it. It is usually enjoyed over white rice and black beans.

3. Scheduled 3 blog posts to go live in the following 10 days.

4. Got some nice feedback about sourdough bread baking from folks at The Fresh Loaf forum, feel ready to attempt some serious baking next weekend

5. Ordered all the appliances for our kitchen renovation: gas range, hood, refrigerator, and dishwasher. Feels great, we should start the renovation in a couple of weeks.

6. Made tentative flight arrangements to go see my Mom on her 90th Birthday party in Brazil.... Hopefully we'll buy the tickets tomorrow. I know she will be very very VERY happy when she learns we are going to be there for the big day!

$1.50 a lb is a steal! We were south of Tivoli last weekend and did u-pick blueberries for $3/lb!

I was in Upstate NY last Sunday visiting family, so my SIL and I took the kids to Mead Orchard and picked 17 lbs of blueberries and about 4 lbs of tart cherries. The kids lost their enthusiasm with the cherries when they discovered they are not quite fantastic as eating-out-of-hand fruit - LOL!

I taught my niece to make pie - we made a cherry and a blueberry, so very good. I love homemade cherry pie, it is my favorite, and very difficult to find in CA because that is one of the few fruits that does not grow well here.

LOL @ 4 - make sure to keep doing that alone time, it is very important. smileys/smile.gif

Erin, that is interesting about how you felt icky after eating the croissant.

I've had that same experience after eating too much of white flour items, though it doesn't stop me from sometimes over-indulging. Last night a made buttermilk biscuits and had a few too many - ugh, but they do taste so good.

Enjoy your celebration with Mom - that is very cool! Manioc - is that along the lines of

cassava root?

A post by Sally in the zucchini recipes thread reminded me to make them

There is a recipe for baked avo fries on the Closet Cooking site. It reminded me of a recipe I pulled out of Bon Appetit in about 2009 so I went to find it.

It is more a method than a recipe- put oil in a pan, about 1/2" or more because you will fry the fries. Then cut avos into substantial strips (maybe 1/2" or more). Have three bowls ready- seasoned flour (I use oregano, pepper, a little salt), panko crumbs (I use homemade bread crumbs) and beaten eggs. Heat the oil. Dredge the avo strips with flour, dip in egg then roll in crumbs and fry until brown on both sides. I keep the cooked fries in a slow oven just to keep warm while finishing the rest. Sprinkle with a little salt and/or make a ranch or creamy chipotle dip.

I don't know where Mead Orchard is, but yes, they are

very reasonable here. Big - the size of a dime!

Was thinking of you guys! So sorry I could not make it! I still can't fathom how you ran into

Sandra last weekend in the park.. Just doing the math... on the number of people that must have been walking in the park in this heat!

Sorry I missed the dinner! Paella and Tapas.... YUM!!!

my six. can I mention that we're having the most beautiful weather this summer.

Introduced visiting Family to Cowboy Caviar and vegetables roasted in foil on the grill.

Kept my tongue when dealing with our friend's very picky 15 year old grandson. He/they were on their own to get him fed after the first day. gahhhhh.

s'mores by the fire are the best dessert. always makes for happy campers. I make a big tray with selections like Reeses cups and Ghiradelli squares(the caramel,mmmmm) and regular Hershey chocolates, graham cracker squares(what a great invention, the square stacks!), and those chocolate-covered on one side cookies that someone mentioned. some of our friends also like to just smear canned fudge icing on their grahams for the chocolate. or Nutella. all was available.

Smoker full of salmon

baked Blueberry/rhubarb cream cheese bundt cake for munching and with early morning coffee. texas brownies were a disaster---tasted like soap to me, not sure why.

Fishing with my uncle who is visiting from the Chicago area. what great teamwork---well, maybe more like the Keystone Kops, but we landed my sockeye.

~~~waving back~~~watch out for fish yuk. my uncle is 83 and walks with a cane
but he wanted to be by the river every day. the 2 of us were there one morning alone and I just had to flip for reds for just a bit, never thinking I would catch one. He hobbled over with the net, I gave him the pole to hang onto and I netted the fish, me with my healing broken arm and him with his stroke weakened right side and bum leg. we were a site to see!
