Saturday Six

Scored lots of fruit and veggies from grocery stores this morning, including corn, asparagus and green beans. Publix must have more than a dozen different friuts and berries featured at reasonable prices. I bought raspberries to make the raspberry buttermilk cake from Epi.

a tropical system is forming in the gulf and may be headed our way. I hate summer in Florida.

Deleted Tastespotting from my rss feeds. I can't keep up. Nice to see the unread entries go from over 500 to just over 100.

A post about mulberries sure stirred up memories of my childhood. They are so good combined with gooseberries and baked into a pie. Does anyone today remember gooseberries?

Alaskan Sockeye salmon for dinner tonight. I would like to know why two weeks ago the salmon I got at Sam's Club was so delicious and the salmon from same source we had this evening was not very good. Definitely not from how it was cooked. What's the difference and how can I tell????

Nothing for the sixth, except the oven french fries and corn on the cob we had with the salmon were really good. Wishing all who read a great weekend.

Hmm, not sure about the salmon, but here are my Saturday Six

I plan on picking as many mulberries as I can reach tomorrow morning and then making something good with them. Too many mosquitos out there after I came home tonight, after the rain.

Listening to my two cats try and start something with each other. They love each other but like to torment each other too.

I met a friend and we went out to lunch and then furniture shopping this afternoon (her, not me). Boy, is that exhausting especially in a 100-year-old building that doesn't have air conditioning, but does have 6 floors.

I've heard of gooseberries but never had them, that I know of, Curious!

Bought pickled eggs today (Jake and Amos) and tried one for some protein for dinner. Who put corn syrup in my pickled eggs (one of the ingredients), and why?! Yeeeuckk!

Wondering why I go into a stop-n-go to get tuna salad (before I bought the pickled eggs) and when I can't find it, don't walk out empty-handed, but instead come out with Suzi Q's and peanut butter fudge. It's the kids, yeah, that's it, it's for the kids.

Saturday Six

I planted a banana tree, a strawberry guava tree, 5 papaya trees, a
Nemesia 'Opal Innocence' and raspberry color crepe myrtle seedling I started, in our SUNNY back yard.

I planned on going to the store yesterday but it rained. Thought I’d go today but rained was called for and it never rained. I’m out of a lot of things but there’s still food in the house to eat. I hate to go on weekends, so I thought I’ll just wait till Monday. Now they’re forecasting the largest chance of rain then, can I make it till Tuesday?
With all that rain coming I should go to the nursery tomorrow and buy more grass fertilizer and weed killer to spread before the rain starts.

My neighbor severely trimmed their lychee nut tree, so I helped just a little in the clean up effort.

My oriental neighbor has a lot of beautiful orange flowers in her yard. She gave me some and I planted them, looking forward to them seeding themselves for more of those gorgeous flowers next year. She doesn't know the name of them, so I searched the internet and we still don't know.

I made a new raw food energy ball today but decided it’s not worth making them again. I’ve discovered there is now coconut sugar, good for diabetics, and coconut milk powder that I want to use soon.

On our mile + walk I see a mulberry tree. I enjoyed them as a child too, but this mulberry tree is not the pretty one that I remember.
Salmon…There is a canned variety called Crown Prince Alderwood Smoked Alaska Coho Salmon…if you’re able to find it, it’s very good.

My Saturday Six

Thought about & prepared my menu for Sunday dinner; we've invited DH's sisters to join us. The challenge is to come up with low potassium foods we can all enjoy.

Sunday is supposed to be a rainy day so settled on Coq au Vin and a new asparagus salad for the main course. After the main we'll have a watermelon/cucumber/feta salad served in a wine glass. Dessert will be Blueberry Buttermilk Cake with vanilla frozen yogurt & fresh blueberries. Oh, for appetizers we'll have some canapes with herbed gorgonzola on toasted baguette slices and topped with bits of strawberries. I may do some shrimp & red pepper aioli as well.

Shopped for all the ingredients I need.

Prepared the Coq au Vin and with the leftover pearl onions made a port glazed version.

Fixed a simple dinner of grilled T bone steak, steamed corn on the cob and a salad of halved grape tomatoes, crispy bacon bits, basil and a vinaigrette with red wine vinegar & evoo. Delish!

After dinner watched Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares". Why do people think having a restaurant is an easy way to make money? So many deservedly lose their shirts on the project.

My Sunday Six

1. I was so excited that I was going to make the Saturday Six, until I realized it was Sunday. That's what happens when kids are out of school and hub works from home.

2. I am going to finish pickling the jalapenos that I was supposed to pickle yesterday.

3. I am going to make the dreaded oatmeal cookies for hub.

4. I am planning on weeding in the garden, in the heat, thinking of it as a spa steam bath, tyring to convince myself it will be good for me, rather than hard work.

5. I am so thankful that our lawn mower is finally fixed so hub can go and mow the lawn instead of paying a gardener $90 to mow it.
Do not buy a Sears Craftsman Zero Gravity (Turn, but the way Bubba drives it, it looks like zero gravity) lawnmower. If we hadn't had the warranty on it, we would have had to replace it, all $3k of it!.

6. We are watching my stepdaughter's little PekoLhasa, or something like that. And she is always under my feet. I am finally looking around before I take a step backwards. No more moon boots, please! She is adorable though. Here name is Gabby, so when I call either Gabby or Abby, they both come. And they play together which is so unbelievably cute.

6a. My son and I have gotten into the habit of watching either Chopped or Alton Brown as a tuck-in ritual. And dang if he can't call the chefs that get Chopped almost everytime. He loves all the goofy characters on AB.

My Sunday Six

It's been too hot to cook today. We have 92F here - we don't have air conditioning because heat is normally not the issue here - so we just flipped two hamburgers on the BBQ, chopped up some cucumber and tomatoes, added hamburger dressing and ketchup and bread - and that was it. by the time Better Half remembered he wanted onion rings, we were just too hot to go into the kitchen to slice them *LOL*

For the same reason we didn't make waffles today. No way am I heating up the iron.

Today was a good excuse to eat ice cream. Had three scoops.smileys/smile.gif

Because I'm trying to diet, I cut up a melon and served it cold. It was the best melon ever.

Pretzels also taste good in the heat.

I have found out that water - pure natural water - is THE best drink in this heat. I have tried iced tea and iced coffee, but I keep coming back to water.

My weekend six....

1. Sat AM be at the gates for opening at the PYO for black raspberries, my favorite. Bushes were loaded and it was a gorgeous day so I picked 1 1/2 flats. Then went to the checkout where I overturned the 1/2 flat! Rescued most of the juicy berries.

2. Made 2 batches of jam with the berries. Actually a cross between jelly and jam I think. I put the berries thru the squeezo to remove the seeds and then made jam with the remaining pulp. Delicious!

3. Made black raspberry bars to bring to a friends for dinner. Used a bit of the left over puree to make the curd for the bars. They were a big hit! My friend made a farmers market dinner: Green salad with roasted beets, green peppers with a bison stuffing, gold and purple cauliflower with hollandaise sauce, and green and yellow beans. What a great dinner!

4. Sunday made Marilyn's bran muffins to be eaten with the black raspberry jam. Muffins turned out great--thanks Marilyn!

5. Tried Cooks French Potato Salad with Dijon Mustard and Fines Herbes. It's sitting on counter waiting for dinner. I am having a very hard time not eating the entire bowl myself. It is one of the best potato salads I have ever made.

6. Poach salmon for Sara Fosters salmon cakes for dinner tonight.

I am very lucky this weekend, most of what I made turned out well for a change! That doesn't happen very often.........

Hey where is everyone this weekend? My Sunday Six....

Well, more of a weekend six like Barbara:

My parents came to visit yesterday, it is unseasonably warm here and like a warm San Jose evening, we walked to the Max's Opera Cafe for dinner. My steak was nice, mUm had a bacon cheeseburger and Ken had seared ahi salad. The food was great! Our waitress had a lovely soprano voice, very good and she sang an aria for us, and of *course* I forget its name. Lovely night.

This morning I made a pot of Blue Bottle coffee for us, and I have never seen a pot disappear so quickly! It was delicious.

I have just finished my proposal to this non profit to hire me to do their social media networking and I present it tomorrow. Fingers crossed! I really am not sure what I am doing to be quite honest but I'm giving it the old college try.

Tonight's dinner is the baked potato from last night plus a buffalo burger patty from TJ's.

It's really warm here today and it feels like the entire city is out celebrating Pride weekend away from my part of town, strangely quiet out! But I'm wondering if I should just head to Ocean Beach with a beer in my purse, since I've been stuck inside all day writing.

I still haven't candied those kumquats!

My Sunday Six

Went to Tuscan Heights Lavender Gardens in Whitmore. Lovely day, wonderful food and the lavender fields were amazing.

Missed the Farmer's Market on Saturday, but went to a smaller one today. Found what I needed to make Gazpacho.

It is 105° here today. Thank goodness for cold salad recipes, and BBQ's.

I'm learning to make some home made solutions for cleaning, laundry, etc. It is fun and much less costly that commercial products.

I'm catching up with some old friends and inviting them for lunch...what took me so long!

Another room in the house has been completely painted. I'm loving the fresh, clean closets and all the room I am gaining by going through my clothes, and other stuff.

My weekend Six

As others mentioned, the West Coast has caught the heat. The air conditioning kicked on at 9:15am and it was 104 when I went to the library this afternoon so I'm not cooking or doing much of anything.

Yes, I'm bad. Today's food groups: KFC and ice cream. Resistance is futile.

I want to make the cinn donut muffins but wondering how you all pawn them off on your co-workers. Mine all don't want to eat any type of goodies or they complain I'm ruining their waistlines. Hell-o...I want adoration, not complaints people!

Went to TJ's for fresh veggies - wore my new FitFlops out and about. Got a blister.

Need to go to Whole Foods to get Tea Tree Oil. Used a coupon and got a facial for $20 (yay!). Now want to make my own hydrating face mask using a recipe I found on the web.

Browsing David L.'s Perfect Scoop cookbook. Considering going to a party week after next where everyone brings homemade ice cream. Not sure if I want to do this given, the one and only time I've made it before it didn't set-up. Maybe I should do a trial run this coming weekend.

Dr appt, got new blood work results from new dr. Went back on the cholestrol lowering drugs even though I don't like them, but they do work for me. Look Ma, no cav...I mean, less cholestrol
(change in one month of being on meds):
Total 499 -> 224
Ratio 4.65 -> 2.67 (Healthy! Or healthy for me anyhoo.)

Weekend Six:

Went to our cabin at Tahoe & saw a HUGE bear between our front door and the street!

Prepped cabin for honeymooners (son getting married on July 4--no excuses for forgetting the anniversary!)

Left Ginger-Lemon Scones, eggs, juice, espresso pot, cups, little spoons, my homemade spag sauce in freezer, homemade pesto, parm cheese, homemade sourdough bread, bottle of wine.

At home picked our first crooked neck squashes, they were SO good!

Picked our lettuces & red onions & little yellow pear tomato for salad.

Made that delicious julienned raw beet & cooked quinoa salad again. (FINALLY learned to use that mandoline....)

another weekend six

Mooseburgers and grilled corn on the cob on the banks of the Kenai River---what a glorious sunny Saturday evening!

I went fishing for Red salmon on Sunday---caught the limit of 3---and have the requisite black and blue belly from fighting with the fishing pole to get those beasts into the boat(do you feel sorry for me??)

I don't like cleaning fish. I gutted them and left them whole---vacuum packed and in the freezer. So now I see fish eyes staring at me when I reach in for the ice cream.

made a big batch of rhubarb/berry jam, and started handing it out to friends. the rhubarb is so nice this year.

made 2 batches of the Pioneer Woman cinnamon roll dough(had a bunch of milk to use up). After the first good rise, I portioned the dough into 4 big baggies, let it rest for about an hour and then into the freezer. I took out 1 of the frozen packets on Sunday, let it thaw, shape and it rose just fine and baked up beautifully.

made lo-sugar applesauce oatmeal cookies for a friend watching his sugar intake. He is so appreciative. a good friend who shared with others.

Thanks...

...though it's really the Liptor and Zetia I'm taking.

Next step is tweaking with supplements, per dr. Lets just say Fish Oil, in a word: blech.

Wow salmon, jam and cinnamon rolls!! wish we lived in a smaller state--well not really,

but when I retire again, I'll drop in more often!
