Saturday Six

Up bright and early to access the flood damage in the basement (none, thank goodness).

Since I was downstairs, I looked through the pantry and brought up some crushed tomatoes and some garbanzo beans. Decided to make Greek Cabbage Rolls (ground turkey, feta cheese, rice, onion, rosemary, and lemon juice) for tonight. It'll go in the oven in about an hour.

Making hummus to go with toasted whole wheat pitas for FIL's b'day tommorow night. Red pepper salad should go good as a garnish I think.

Plans for miniature golf and visiting the new "Five Guys' Burgers" tomorrow. We've heard so much about it and now we finally have one nearby.

Going to see if I can find late-season Silver Queen corn anywhere. Maybe will pick apples on the way. So cool and autumny out there, it just seems like the right thing to do!

If we do, I'll make a sour cream apple Bundt cake for upcoming bake sale - assuming I can freeze it; maybe will make a second, smaller one for us. I'll look through the archives for a good one.

My Saturday six...

Recovering from a very busy week required a strong cup of coffee and five pieces of bacon today. And a nap!

I opened a jar of pureed tomatoes instead of the whole tomatoes I needed for a recipe, so this afternoon I'm making Katy's Lycopene Cream again and grilled goat cheese and bacon jam sandwiches. This is my go-to comfort food.

I have to seriously clean up my apartment, including the fridge. Sadly I will have a lot of food waste which bothers me greatly. Just how long can I keep cooked beans anyway?

I may make a big pot of veggie bin soup also, with what's salvageable.

Sunday I'm doing another ferry building tour! My first Mission tour last weekend was a big success despite the heatwave. I think I will celebrate with roasting a chicken in my new porcelain roaster tomorrow night! Payday is next week so I get to try out some new recipes and will be trolling the pages here for recipes today. (happiness!)

Hope you all have a great weekend!

My Weekend Six~

~Enjoying pear tarte tatin I made yesterday.
~Cool temps and rain today, so I whipped up our first chili of the season
~Going to make Better than Twix bars tomorrow...hubby is requesting chocolate chip cookies, though!
~Watching LOTS of football
~Want to get into my new novel: The Lotus Eater
~Still planning food for Indian themed book club in about a week...have chicken samosas in the freezer and found a few more appetizers to try.

Not quite six but

today was OU/TX Red River Shootout (sorry, I refuse to change to rivalry) Family Reunion Day at ninety-five year old Grandad's house. Kind of a small crowd this year, but it was nice anyway. We have the best BBQ catered. I don't even LIKE ribs normally, but I could make myself sick on these, plus terrific smoked chicken.

Weigh-in at WW's this morning. Maybe one more week to hit my first twenty pounds down. This is a lot harder and slower than it was when I was in my late twenties.

Took a nap before I went to the party.

Long lazy coffee-drinking, puzzle-working newspaper reading morning-I just love these.

All in all, nice day.

Tomorrow, back to healthier eating, although my aunt who makes all the Chex mix for the party made me my own batch since I can't have peanuts. I brought home a gallon jar and have to hide it from myself, then ration out in small amounts.

She usually goes to the health food store and buys other nuts and roasts them

herself to add to mine, but this year she ran out of time so mine is just cereal with other goodies. Probably a good thing as it cuts down on the calories, but I've been known to polish off a gallon jar she has given me in less than a week, so I've definitely got to ration it.

Weekend six.....

*Sat morning was a bike ride to Mt Vernon with friends. We parked about 8 miles out. There is a beautiful trail along the Potomac and the weather could not have been more perfect. We had the best time.

*dinner at the home of dear friends. My assignment as usual was to bring anything I wanted. I made Michael Chiarello's Rosemary Sand Cake. Instead of summer berries I used a jar of homemade plum orange cardamom jam to top the cake. Also as usual, dinner was so good not much dessert was consummed but those that tried it really enjoyed it--and I got to bring home the left overs!

*Defrosted some of last years' pumpkin puree and am going to make a couple of pumpkin breads with the cream cheese ribbon.

*Have a bunch of left over cilantro/cumin brown rice, need to come up with something for dinner to serve with it.

*Want to order the book "Dinner at Mr. Jefferson's: Three Men, Five Great Wines, and the Evening That Changed America". Yesterday on the bike ride a friend told me about it and highly recommended it both for the history and the food.

*Hopefully will have time to run to Home Depot for a few mum plants for planting in the front yard. Fall has finally arrived!

Barb, do you think if I used all-purpose flour it would change the texture too

much? And could you please post your recipe for the homemade plum orange cardamom jam? Sounds great! Thx

Hi Dawn! I do think using flour would change the texture, but I certainly think it would still

delicious. The potato starch lends a very silky texture to the cake. Maybe use cake flour? I am sorry I am not the best person to ask about types of flour!

REC: Mirabelle Plum with Ornage and Cardamom

Mirabelle Plum with Orange and Cardamom
Source: Mes Confitures by Christine Ferber

2.5 lbs mirabelle plums or 2 1/4 net
1 C granulated sugar + 3 3/4 C
2 oranges
3 1/2 oz water
juice of 1 lemon
1 1/2 t cardamom

Rinse the oranges in cold water and slice them in very thin rounds. Rinse the plums in cold water, dry in a towel and split to remove the pits. In a preserving pan, poach the orange slices with 1C sugar in the water. Keep cooking at a boil until the slices are translucent. Add the plums, lemon juice, cardamom and 3 3/4 C sugar. Bring to a simmer and pour into a ceramic bowl. cover with a sheet of parchment and refrigerate overnight.

Next day bring to a boil again. Keep cooking on high heat for about 5 minutes, stirring gently and skimming carefully. Return to a boil. Check the set. Pour into jars immediately and seal.

My notes: no Mirabelle plums to be found here but I did find Shiro Plums so I used them. (Both are yellow plums). Also, I recommend cutting the orange rounds in half after slicing.

Enjoy!

PS I have made this recipe as written and also molded it into the Sure Jell Less sugar pectin recipe. Both were wonderful!

don't you remember Katy's Lycopene Soup recipe? I'll post in Traca's post below about soups...

and I have made the bacon jam, I really like making it but I am working on finishing a jar (slowly) of Skillet's from Seattle. mmmm, it's so good!!
