Saw Sara Moulton on tv this am. She said the government no longer recommends rinsing your turkey

before cooking. I always heard you should rinse your bird and hadn't heard this was no longer the case. Anyone know the reason for the change?

To keep from spreading the bacteria around the kitchen. But I saw her on something else and she

said if you really feel the need to wash it, use a little bleach in the water! It was a very small amount, but how sad to think our food is getting so contaminated that bleach is necessary.

I figured that was probably the reason. Assuming you can properly clean your sink,

would it still be better to rinse it (which I am inclined to do), or does it not matter?

I saw that too. - she said "the government recommends" but did not state what she does...

As Curious1 said, it was to to avoid spreading contamination around the kitchen. I can't wrap my head around an unwashed bird, so I will continue to do it, and will continue to very carefully wash down my kitchen and switch to a clean wash cloth & dish towels. (I caught a dandy case of salmonella poisoning once - from salad at a restaurant - so believe me I'm cautious!)

Here is an article, from the New York Times, that discusses this topic. (From a link rosie posted earlier - thanks rosie!)

Frankly, I am tired of the "government recommends" advice

and wish they would keep their nose out of our kitchens and put their brains to work on keeping us safe, obtaining peace, and a strong economy.
I know what is best for my family and do not need Washington telling me what it is.
Happy Thanksgiving Day to all of you.
