'Season of life' moment: Both of my boys are cooks and bakers. I'm proud of that.

I wanted, at the very least, to teach them some basic skills as they grew up so they could cook 'the basics' and not eat a bunch of fast food or processed junk from the freezer section at the grocers. They both went much further than that, I'm happy to report, and my eldest has become a prolific cook and baker. The younger one is still in college, but for the first time, he has a kitchen in the apartment he shares with a roommate. He is also doing quite a bit of cooking and learning.

Both of them have come home to our house, the home they grew up in, and made similar comments. "Wow, Dad! Your kitchen has so much USEFUL equipment, tools, appliances, and cookbooks! I grew up here and didn't realize the incredibly useful inventory you've amassed!"

Almost as good as hearing, "Mom. Dad. Thank you for raising us in a home that knows the Lord."

I love my family.

Two of my children have also become very adventurous and creative cooks

My older daughter has a big garden, lives near a lot of small farms that produce meat and cheeses, and her partner does a lot of hunting and foraging.
They buy very little at supermarkets, opting instead to purchase from the co-op or bartering with other growers.
They freeze, can, dehydrate and freeze-dry a lot of food.

My son has been the total surprise. He started his adventure with beer brewing, but has now added baking, cheese making and pickling to his repertoire. I can't wait to see where he wanders next!

I guess all the time I spent in the kitchen rubbed off a bit!

Our three cook as well, one girl, two boys! Our daughter has taken it further and grows

a huge garden every year. She and hubby remodeled their large
back porch and made a green house out of it with several windows for light. She grows from seed now, that they start in the winter. She harvests from her Maple trees to make syrup, she knows how to can, process a deer and makes her own soap and other personal products. Plus, she works full time with challenged children of all ages and is in her 22nd year of doing so. She was a handful from the time she turned 19, but found her way eventually and is now very happily married, raising a second round of kids plus two foster boys she and hubby adopted. Our boys love to cook and grill and do it well.
So thankful for our family. We are not perfect, but who is!
