Seattle: Apologies if this is an unsuitable post for this forum, but(m)

Before Concierge and Epi split sites, there was a great Rest. Roundtable forum.I've gone on the Concierge site, but no one seems to have ever used it. What a surprise. Yet another situation of fixing something that isn't broken.

My plight is an impulse getway to Seattle. Is there any posters out there that have great recommendations for great restaurants in the Seatle area? We're not looking for 5 star places, rather more importantly, best kept secrets, or new hip good places with an adventurous menu. Thanks for any help!!

Hi Cath, when will you be here and in what part of the area will you be? and...

any particular type of food are you leaning toward?

I think Ray's Boathouse is great for fresh seafood. It's a well known spot but locals as well as visitors go there. I also like Lark (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/dining/venue.asp?venueID=193) and Flying Fish ( ) a lot.

If you tell me more about where you'll be, if you'll be visiting friends, if you've been here before, etc., I can give you more ideas.

For instance, if you go to the Pike Place Market one day, and you should, there are lots of little places to get cheap and great food to either eat sitting down or munch on while you roam the market.

Right...though the Herbfarm is quite aways out of town and usually it takes at .....

least a couple of months to get reservations and it's very pricey, but worth checking out.

Seattle Suggestions ...

I lived there for 6 years and the food scene has changed some but when I head back every summer I hit the same tried and true spots ( I do try and sneak a new one in every once in a while).

Have fun!!!

* Wild Ginger
* Ray's Boathouse - great view!
* I also second Lin_in_Seattle's suggestion for Flying Fish - it used to be my all time favorite
* A Crocque Monsieur sandwich from Campange Bistro is a must for a lunch stop! (please note the Bistro - this is not the restaurant)
* And for dessert a stop to the Dahlia Lounge for their made to order donuts with fresh rhubarb jam and marscapone (we have had this "to go" many times).
* For the best breakfast you must go to Salmon Bay Cafe in Ballard - Totally down home atmosphere but all the fisherman eat there and it is awesome. Don't even try it if you are looking for fancy - this is very downhome - come in grab a coffee and a paper and order any of the amazing breakfast dishes. Their stuffed French Toast is always good and their Magnolia omelette is sensational.
5109 Shilshole Ave. NW
* If you are craving Italian, Salvatore's is our favorite

I am dying to try Fish Club by Todd English- that is on the agenda for this summer.

I am envious - can you tell how much I love it there!

These recommendations are exactly what I was looking for(m)

A few yars ago my husband took me on a mystery tour which turned out to be Seattle during Cinco de Mayo and a Dame Edna performance.I remember walking by Wild Ginger and suggesting we enter, but I was outvoted. Since then I've seen great reviews and am dying to try it.

Ray's - thanks for the recommendation, I've wondered about it before. And the Salmon Bay Cafe sounds like our kind of serendipidous adventure.

It all sound good-thanks so much!

Lin, we'll be stayng downtown...(M)

pretty close to Pike Pl.market. Just for overnight and we'd rather park the car and walk/taxi stay around town. We usually favour Athena's for breakfast, are there other places in and around the market itself that is good?

Thanks for another Ray's recommendation. Good sign if the locals go there.

The last time we were there (for a ball game) we stopped at a small bar (can't remember name). The fella at the table beside us was eating a plate of fried tiny oysters that looked exquisite and I've always not regretted ordering some myself. I'm planning a beer and oyster interlude there for sure, at some point.

My own private agend is to visit Sephora's, Sur le Table and the KCTS bookstore, but any more shopping trips will test my husbands patience:)

Also....

I like Chez Shea for dinner and Etta, one of Tom Douglas's restaurants, is about half a block up from the market and is open for lunch and dinner.

The Crumpet shop is there and I always have to get one, fresh off the grill with one of their great toppings. Likewise the Market Grill is a great place to grap a seafood sandwich on the run and has gotten great reviews nationwide. I'm trying to think of the bar you mean, but can't come up with a name.

And, I'm not sure how long ago it's been since you were there, but the Wild Ginger moved a few years ago, and is now on 3rd Avenue. Still not very far away, but if you decide to go there, do double check on the address.

As far as shops, there are so many neat boutiques and places all along first and second avenue. And there is the Spice shop in the market as well as DeLaurenti's for all things Italian.

I don't know where you live, but there's a Trader Joe's not too far away, if there isn't one near you, that you might want to check out and a Larry's Market as well.

Hopefully Marc will check in too.

Lin: OOH! Where is the Trader Joes??? ..

I'm from Vancouver (BC) and we don't have them there. Heard so-o much about TJ's!

There are two not too far away from where you will be....

If you have a car, there are actually three.
One is on Queen Anne Hill and the buses go right up there from downtown...about a 10 minute trip. The other is on Capital Hill, maybe a 15 minute trip by bus. And the third one is by the University of Washingon. If you've got a car, they are all close by. I've included a link!

On edit, and there is another in the University District which will be on your way to Sephora's. Just thought of that, this morning. Also Whole Foods is nearby that Trader Joes as well.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions (m)

I'm sure it will help us have a wonderful time, what we can squeeze into 2 days. And thank you Lin for correcting me on the name of the Athenian. I think I know that, but seem to have a mental block about it. It's dawned on us that we'll miss their shrimp omelete, since they're closed on Sunday (it only took us about three times of pressing our disappointed faces against the closed doors)so we will make a stop for happy hour tomorrow (wicked caesars)and may have to try the Salmon Bay Cafe - thanks buonappetito!

Cath, wasn't correcting you...I thought I had misspelled it! Didn't notice you had!

Enjoy your trip. I didn't know it was tomorrow. I hope you have a great time. Please let us know how it was!

Thanks and I'm back m)

The two days went very quickly but we had a fun time. Spend Sat shopping around downtown, went for happy hour to Vonn's bar on Pine. They had a 'Wheel of Fortune' wheel which they spinned to determine happy hour specials. Friendly bar staff, busy place. Meals were more or less 'on the run'. Popped by Pike Place to pick up pasties for morning coffee and went to the Athenian for oysters and steamed mussels, with cocktails. We were going to dine at Tulios, but afer dropping spoils of the day off at hotel, we spend the evening in Belltown, since it was a nice night. Hit a couple of interesting bars with live music, recommended by barkeep at Vonn's. Finished off at a Thai restaurant Called Jai Thai (great food!), before walking back to hotel. Sunday was spent wandering alleys of Market and then to U. district. Thanks again for all your suggestions, more time needed there, will store info for next time.

Oh! Forgot to mention (m)

I discovered Piroshkis (sp). There is a store a the market making all kinds of these buns filled with a myriad of fillings. Cheap and good, this was our lunch. We had mushrom, celery and onion Pirshkis and they were fabulous! Bought a marzipan one to save for the ride home.

We ordered a Penang curry and Pad Thai (m)

The Pad Thai was 'counry style' which had tamarind sauce stirred in. DH asked for it spicy efore I could stop him, but it was delish! The Penang ws superb as well. Only downside was they were all out of the appy we ordered (what happened when you eat late at a busy restaurant,I guess. We ended up having a cream cheese/crab wonton thing which was unremarkable, but they felt so bad about running out of the other one, they didn' charge us for it.

Sounds like you had a good time...sorry the weather wasn't better...

were you able to make it to Sephora? How about Trader Joe's. Belltown is a great place...hard to miss there. Will have to check out the Thai place next time I'm down that way.
