SFRC: Anyone here following the "Paleo" diet?

Sandra, a coworker did. She lost 30 lbs when combined with 3 weekly

one-on-one workout sessions with a personal trainer. This was over a 4 month period. She paid $3,000 for a six month service and the trainer put her on the Paleo. This was last year when I was working on the British military program.

Now I've got to say this honestly...she stuck with it, lost consistently and looked good. But....man, she was mean. I think she was simply hungry, maybe even starving, but it came out in crankiness and mean-ness to her coworkers.

Here was her typical breakfast: 2 hard boiled eggwhites, 5 strawberries and 10 blueberries. I remember this vividly because we sat together in a four-man cubicle and one morning she dropped one of her 10 blueberries, got down on the 20-year old carpeted floor, crawled around until she found it, brushed off the little sucker and ate it.

When she sat back up and saw Manuel and I starring at her, she said: "WHAT! I only get so much to eat a day!"

Then she would bring in bacon, wrap it in several papertowels and zap it for several minutes. You know that utterly delightful aroma of crispy bacon filling the air with molecules of crunchy, salty goodness? Well, you got that scent briefly, rapidly followed by the stench of burnt, charred meat. I think she was attempting to vaporize the fat and leave behind pure protein.

One girl brought in a bag of M&M's and left it on a communal table near us. T grabbed the bag, walked up to the coworker's desk, slammed it down, and yelled: "What the hell do you think you're doing!"

Ya, fun times at work.

I saw her recently and would say, based on a totally biased opinion formed from my own years of yo-yo weight gain & losses, that she has regained ~15 pounds.

That is so sad. And she paid $3,000 for that? When will people realize that Julia Child...

...had it right all along.

Eat well, eat fresh, eat local, eat at home. Or something like that.

I didn't permanently lose the 85 extra pounds I was carrying until I started eating very little processed foods, sugar, salt, white flour, etc. I had to develop diabetes before I finally woke up, but I finally got a clue.

Not trying to sound healthier-than-thou here, but clean protein, healthy carbs (little starch) and plenty of fruits and water will do it for most people. Start moving around more (cardio workouts for those so inclined) and it only gets better.

That is a terrible way to loose weight. Everyone knows that diets don't work

it has to be a life style change to healthy eating, and moderate exercise. Works everytime. It is a mindset...not a way to punish your body.

"Everyone knows"? I'll have to tell my dad, who's lost 30 lb. (and counting) on South Beach.

Anyway, the original question was focused on a specific diet--doesn't seem right to turn it into a diets-are-good-or-bad-film-at-11 discussion. smileys/wink.gif

I know of people doing it, mostly it seems like a lifestyle change (like going vegan) vs. diet

Sounds like the 10 blueberry person was going extreme. No wonder she was cranky!

The point is that unless one makes permanent changes to their eating and exercise habits...

...they will revert to the same bad habits that got them in trouble in the first place. This is classic behavior and is well-documented.

Many of these diets offer long-term plans for maintenance and could be a life-style solution. But, many "dieters" see it as a means to an end and not something that should spur a life-long change.

Out of hyphens now,

Michael

OK, forget it -

The question was not so much about "diets"

It was more if anyone was following it - I called it a "diet" because it's a way of eating, like the mediterranean "diet"

Oh, and bacon? definitely not part of this "diet" - no processed foods, only lean proteins, veg, fruit and nuts, no counting berries and no weighing food - not so bad, hey?

Whatever....

On the contrary, Michael, you kept it perfectly ON topic...

You described the Paleo "diet" almost to a tee, did you realize that? Look it up maybe.

Why is it that when someone posts about low carb, or weight watchers, etc... everyone says "oh great!" "congrats", fab way to eat, etc etc...

But I post up a lesser known one and the posts are dismissive?

Really?

Ok, guilty, as charged, I had never encountered the paleo diet, and was ...

...offering what worked for me.

You asked if anyone had tried the diet. I have not, and that should have been my answer.

I reacted to Marilyn's friend's experience without looking more closely at the paleo diet. I shouldn't criticize something I know little or nothing about.

Sorry again,

Michael

Sandra, my intention was not to dismiss your post. I honestly had not heard of it before. Your

post prompted me to do a quick look up and will add to my library list. SO, I did not think I would be able to contribute to your question about experience.

If you are doing it, then congrats and kudos!! I went through their website, and they imply that salt is a no-no. How is that transition for you? (love my salt!) They also had places on-line suggested for wild game meat. Are you following the diet that closely? I am a huge fan of lots of veggies and fruit. I have a fruit bowl filled on my table, and Always have fresh veggies cut up for quick snacks. If I recall correctly, there was limited dairy mentioned?? How was that transition. I LOVE my cheese!

If you are on the diet, congrats! Would love to learn from your experience.

Thanks barb_b

you were not dismissive at all, no worries...

the advice was not for me, so I don't know about the salt and dairy adjustments...

it's for someone else, and I figured since everyone is always posting stuff about new ways of eating (heck, don't we even have a forum for that alone?!) that someone might have ideas...

no worries, I have gone to another forum to ask...

If you're interested in the ins and outs I can send you a private message.
