Skipping Christmas this year...

I am reading all these threads about holiday recipes and Christmas cookies and feeling somewhat guilty.

A couple years ago I read John Grisham's "Skipping Christmas" and thought it a brilliant idea.) This year, I'm doing it. As the webmaster of Christmas-Cookies.com I am kind of in Christmas mode all year long and I must admit I'm a bit burnt out. There is one...just one tiny string of lights in the front of the house, for the sake of the neighbors, and no other Christmas decoration anywhere in the house. And we leave on an 8-night cruise on December 25.

I haven't baked a thing yet and I doubt I will. Perhaps one batch of my very favorite cookie on Dec. 24, and dinner at my mom's, and that will be it for me.

Next year, I'm going whole hog.)

Sounds delightful, Mimi! Several years ago I felt so overwhelmed that...

I pretty much said "to heck with it!" I didn't send out cards, didn't bake, and put out 1-2 Christmas-y things (hung a wreath on the front door). I felt so liberated -- Christmas went on without me! I actually enjoyed Advent, and felt peaceful at Christmas Mass. THAT's what it's all about anyway!

Now I even send my cards out usually on December 26 or 27 when it's officially "Christmas." (I know it's probably taking it a bit too far, but I like the message of NOW it's Christmas.)

Since finding out I have Type II diabetes there are no more cookie marathons. I used to do 10-12 different kinds. So that's a relief!

You will probably have the best Christmas ever - at least I hope you do!

good to see you taking care of yourself...

i suspect that the last month or so may have a tad stressful.

many Christmas smooches. pass some along to the men in your life.

Oh, Mimi, I can so relate! GOOD for you!!

I tell everyone that I'll do what I can do and leave the rest and it will be good enough! And it WILL!

My dearest friend has been diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer and my other dear friend lost her wonderful 19 year old son in a canoe accident on Dec 1. All the 'traditional fun things' we do are great but they really have nothing to do with Christmas, so it feels really good to spend my time and energy on family and friends that need me. (and forget the fluff!)

I did get my little 4' prelit tabletop tree up before my granddaughter who is 2, came to spend the night Fri night. I normally have one that touches the ceiling. No lights on the house. No garland, no centerpieces out. Zilch! Keiley loved the tree! You should have seen her eyes! I was so glad I made that effort for her! It probably looked 9' tall to her! smileys/smile.gif

I have made some spritz and snowball dough and have it in the fridge ready to bake up with Keiley this week. Will make a few tins of candy to give out and that will be it.

Blessings to you and your family, Mimi!

You are a such a blessing to us all!

More importantly, Gayle, I am so sorry to hear about your friends. Sounds like YOU will be ...

their Christmas presents.

God bless you for your kindnesses.

Tueday was our first day off in weeks and we bought a tree and put lights on it. Then we ran out of

energy so there are no ornaments on it yet. I'm not even sure I remember where the ornaments are. I've been stressing over getting it finished but you've convinced me not to worry.

I'm with you Mimi! We're going skiing on the 23rd....

And not back until the 30th....

It's good to go this route once in a while, I have found, it makes the next year that much better!

Bon Voyage!

I'm with Sandra, it's great to shake it up once in a while and do

something different. Have done 2 Christmas cruises and loved them. Did minimal decorating at home a few weeks before we left, which helped keep the Christmas spirit alive around the house, and then thoroughly enjoyed all the holiday festivities on-board ship. Have a fun time on your cruise.

Dear Mimi,

We have no children and no family left that we are close to. So for the last 15 or so years, we have flown out to Maui to meet dear friends from around the world and we celebrate Christmas and the New Year there in a warm climate and the land of Aloha. Santa comes in red velvet shorts and in a canoe.
