*Sniff* Just got back from a conference, and DH had taken out half my herb garden.

He thought it was ugly, and somehow interpreted "I don't care about the lemon balm" as "go ahead and get rid of the sage, rosemary, and parsley too."

At least the French tarragon and the lime thyme survived.

good grief ((((June)))) that's just aweful! will we be seeing his face on the back of a

milk carton in the near future? '-)))

if you can find some, you still have time to plant more sage and rosemary and get it started for next year.

if you need fresh rosemary, just give me a PM, I'm doing some serious pruning and have mailed out some pretty large boxes of it. I'd be happy to send you a "care" package.

Oh Junebug...

I hate when something like that happens. Are you sure you cannot salvage the plants and replant them?

Husbands do the strangest things. Mine built a workshop and...

while I was at work, he and his carpenter took out a Japanese Maple that was 25 years old and had a 35 ft. spread. The colors in the fall were breath thaking. We could have had a nursery come in to dig it up and sell it. That tree was worth about $5000.00. grrrr

while my friend and I were in Paris her new husband cut down a 25 year old wisteria vine to .....

paint the lattice it had grown on. OOF, I don't know how he survived the 10 years he lasted before he ran off with another.

woah, I will never complain about Don not doing enough outside stuff again.

what a loss those great plants and trees were.

and talk about having your plants destroyed.... they just cleared a pot field here and plan to burn a couple of million dollars worth of weed.

it's probably going to go something like this:

Randi, an update on your rosemary and babiana.

The rosemary did well and I used some of the cuttings as skewers---nice. I have 2 plants that I was able to put in the garden. The babiana is just now growing----I almost did it in by letting it go too dormant in my garage! It was too early to plant it when you sent it, we still had snow and frozen ground. And, I didn't want it to bloom out before I could get it into the ground, so I let it set in the cool dark garage for several weeks, and I almost let it go too long. But, I have nice healthy shoots now and maybe it won't bloom this summer, but I think it took hold and I should have blooms next spring. I hope! Thanks!

Update: found a nice rosemary plant and root-bound sage and parsley at the local garden store.

Over the weekend, I planted these in planters, and gave DH strict admonitions not to touch, even if he thinks they're ugly. Also, for future protection, I took cuttings from the thyme, marjoram, and tarragon.

DH's purge also took out all the nice green peppermint (he left the sunburned mint in the planter...??). When I complained, he pointed out he'd *dried* a bunch, and what would I ever use fresh mint in. SIGH. So I made Traca's Cucumber Salad with Thai Lime Dressing using dried mint in the dressing. It was good, but not as good as with fresh mint.

Thank you all for commiserating, and especially thanks Randi for your offer of a care package. I think the rosemary plant I got over the weekend will be enough. It's comforting to know there are people out there who don't think I'm nuts to mourn the loss of what might look like a few ugly plants.

It's so funny that others' husbands have done similar things! When we first moved in, I was delighted to find a big old lilac next to the deck. Within a couple of days, DH had cut it down to the ground. Fortunately, you can't kill a lilac that easily, and within a couple of years, it was back to almost its original size. I'm hoping the peppermint comes back too.

it will be fine and should bloom in the spring and through the summer into fall. glad you had fun

witht the rosemary smileys/smile.gif

that's great. be careful with the potted rosemary. when we had the freeze last nov. the only

rosemary I lost was the potted one.

the mint should come back. I understand it can be hard to get rid of once you plant some. it's a bit on the "invasive" side.

your garden should be lovely again in the spring smileys/smile.gif

Oh Junebug, how depressing! If it's any consolation

you can't really get rid of the lemon balm, even if you are trying too. It will probably come back next year. Ditto with the mint, and sage, at least with me.

I hope he doesn't come around my herb garden - with all the hot weather we've been having it's pretty ugly too!)

Good luck with the new ones.
